Maintaining Sanity in CrazyWorld
    #5348634 - 02/28/06 09:06 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

"Don't let it mess with you! Just laugh it off."
How many times have you heard that, or something similar?
"You don't need to worry about those guys, just don't let them mess with your mind."
Easier said than done, right? Supposedly, "cooler heads prevail," but how can a person keep their cool? When adverse circumstances accumulate, anger, fear, impulsiveness and self-defeating thoughts can lead modern people to make hasty decisions.

Do you want to know a secret? Some of us know an exercise you can use to teach yourself to laugh things off. We call it ANOKQUZ (say "annock-cuz"), and you can use it to keep calm in the face of fear, adversity, invasive thoughts, etc. Want to learn it? "Just a touch of mojo is all you need."

When you think of something that bothers you, that you can't do anything about, just do this. Laugh. Force yourself to laugh. Even if it sounds crazy or artificial, laugh until it becomes genuine. Laugh until the laughter takes you over. Practice that: turn on the most biased, scary news channel on television and watch it until you feel angry or disturbed. Then, turn off the tube and laugh until you feel better. If you start to feel depressed during the day, or frightened, or however you don't want to feel, do ANOKQUZ.

The exercise does not solve your problems. It does not make unpaid bills or abusive husbands go away. The world gets more uncertain daily, and ANOKQUZ can't change that. However, when you apply it regularly, it does give you this: guts. Uncertainty doesn't scare an individual who laughs away fear. And laughter, IMO, creates a space where health and happiness can plug into your life. Try it, it costs nothing and works immediately.

Remember, health=wealth. If you don't have health, all the money in the world can't buy you happiness. So make yourself rich by taking care of your health.
