ok so I was wondering, I have a 'grow bag' going right now and am nearing time to pick the first flush. After the second flush, could i use the 'spent' substrate as spawn for new substrate? would I run into risks of mutations down the line that you can if you do the same with clones?

In my opinion, it would be best to avoid using spent substrate as spawn, as the longer it has been growing & fruiting & fucked with, the greater chance that it is contaminated, even to a slight & unobservable degree.

Why not just take a section of a mushroom and make some agar plates or liquid culture, then use that to inoculate more grow bags? That's what I'd do!

because id have ~2lb of spent 'spawn' instead of of a small tiny little cut of agar. if mixed thoroughly, i would believe the spent spawn would colonize much quicker than the slice of agar even if there is a risk of contamination.

If you inoculate a bunch of jars of grain, you can always have grain spawn on hand, and debating about whether to use a questionable spawn medium wouldn't be an issue

may the trich & penicillium gods be kind to you

Odds are about 98%, it would contaminate.
