    #5346828 - 02/27/06 07:37 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

are the birdseeds supposed to look moist after they come out of the pressure cooker? Is it supposed to look the same as when i put them in the jars just after simmering? or is it supposed to be dry looking?

They are expanded, about 30%.

Suggest you READ THIS LINK

I can open a jar & mash a wbs/grain between my thumbnail & a finger.
They bust right open. A good thing.

The grains should be WET/MOIST inside.

Water should not SQUIRT OUT like an exploding watermelon.

Before cooking is it pretty easy for you to cut into millet? Millet gives me the most problems, milo is as easy as convincing rossane to eat a cake

My WBS jars always look dry after PCing and cooling, but they colonize extremely well.

Straight white millet is touchy.

I prefer a mix of red & white millet, Milo (sorghum), canary seed (Phalaris canariensis) & rye (with a very small amount (far less than 1%)of rape seed thrown in.

Of course, most WBS mixes, also contain some cracked corn & sunflower seed.

A good mix or wbs/grains is (to me) more forgiving.
Some absorb more moisture, some less & it all equals out.
