Stir bars

Hi
I just received a magnetic stirrer. I followed a post called Stir Plate Stir Bars. And tried making these homemade stir bars out of tubing and nails. But my stirrer magnets seem too weak to stir the jar with the tubing on. Any other ideas, that seemed to be the only useful thread...
A plain nail stirs if I get it catch, spinning. But it doesn't stir it well enough in my opinion.

I tried the same thing and it didn't work too well for me. I got my stir bars from www.stirbars.com. There is a $50.00 minimum order but I thought it was worth it.
Here is a list of what you should order:
PIVOT RING Part No. SBM2510PVR 25mm X 10mm 10-pack $25 ea. (2 total)
That will give you 20 stir bars which should be plenty. You can try eBay if you want but good luck. If you happen to find any on eBay, they need to be at least 25mm X 6mm to be of any use. Watch out for those so-called "lot" deals. A lot of those come with a bunch of stir bars that are absolutely worthless because of their small size.
Good luck man.

Another person had the same problem. He bought some factory made stir bars off ebay. They worked for him.
How long are the stir bars you made? Try about 1 inch & see if that works.
The stir plate I have will spin a butter knife, like a propeller.
I gather some stir plates, must have weak magnets, in them.

You can get stir bars, used and new, for cheap on ebay. http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll...+bar&category0=
The teflon coated ones are what I used when I worked in a plant physiology lab. They were great for mixing chems!
edit: whoops, all my info is previously stated by other members. my bad.

That site seems quite pricey. A search from ebay turned up with a 10 dollar, ship right away, company. And they do offer the required size.
Do those commercial stir bars float?... My stirrer doesn't even pick up the nail if I lift it an inch off the surface.
And I tried using a 1 inch nail in length compared to another one an inch longer. It was less effective.
I know a stir plate is effective because it breaks the clumps of mycelium and aerates the solution. Mine only seems to be able to break up the clumps. Do you think its that important to have the bubbles mix through?

As previously stated, eBay is a complete crap shoot. Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don't. When you break down the cost, even at eBay prices, you're better off buying them new. I HATE eBay because I always get sniped at the last minute. Even when I try and snipe others it backfires on me.
Anyway, you have a couple of options available to you. Good luck.

In my experience with the teflon-coated bars, they sink right to the bottom of aqueous solutions.
After all, it's ferrous material (iron)!

ok. I think I will be ordering some of them now. Thanks for all the responses. Probably make one or two with a nail and see the results of them all.

That's hardly a cost savings. You get 3 stir bars for $10.99 plus shipping. You would spend over $36.00 just to get the 10 that www.sitrbars.com sells for $25.00. Also, the smaller size of the 3, 13mm X 3mm is way too small. You need 25mm X 6mm minimum for any appreciable stirring action.
I'm just trying to help you out here. It's your decision so I'll leave at that.

Right. I was still contemplating. I'm going to buy stir bars definitely.
Thanks for telling me the specifics, extremely helpful. I think the bars are sold in sets with options.... But yes it does save when bought in bulk.

I don't know, there are just too many risks involved that way. I think I could do better just shaking the jars ha.

Heh.. that's what I planned on doing. Although I don't really need to sneak in, considering I work in one. Unfortunately, the specific lab I work in doesn't have very much lab-like stuff. No agar, no fun chemicals, nothing for me to borrow save really good scales and some glassware.
Maybe I could just go into the lab nextdoor to get some bars.
EDIT: I didn't make this clear, but I literally meant borrow. I've borrowed and returned a .001 scale and some glass dishes more than once. Just so you don't think any less than me. However.. if I borrowed stir bars I'm not sure if I'd get around to returning them...

Match the stir bar to whatever plate you have. Mine doesn't have a rotating magnet. The only magnet is the stir bar itself. The motor spins a piece of iron, and the magnet goes into the LC. A nail wouldn't do anything. RR

They must differ by brand. My old clunker stir plate has magnets. Strong enough to spin a butter knife.
