Age of fertile cow pies
    #5344757 - 02/27/06 10:20 AM (18 years, 1 month ago)

If a field no longer has cattle, for how long is it active for picking cubes? My field had all the cattle stolen the first of January! Is it worth my time to search this spring to fall?

Thanks!

I'm sure you and your field will be fine... If the cattle were stolen won't the owner be replacing them anyway?

I believe the land was leased to the owner of the cows and it is for sale to developers.

Oh no! You are likely to still encounter cubes in your field given the right conditions. This however would be a good time to start scouting out new locations.

Yep.... A 25 square mile slot has been sold off to all the local Houston home builders.
In the last year over 10,000+++ acres of cattle pasture has been turned into a concrete and brick Blah!
The entire stretch of Mason,Fry,Barker Cypress all the way to 290 has been under urban attack and all the pastures that have held huge Cubensis,Copes populations will soon be gone.
Not just the mushrooms.. Now look at it from a larger scale.
Where have all the Dear gone? Where are all the Skunks,Opossum's,Armadillos,Snakes,Hawks,Rabbets,Scorpions....
All this has gone away and been moved off or killed off at the expense of Urbanite Slob Home Builders that seem to have about two models available so the entire neighborhood looks the same as another as another as another!!
Why cant they just clean up a slot of woods and leave the main trees and build houses around that?
I know I know its all about how many Sardine's you can cram in a can!

Its a sad sad sad thing!

To answer your main question .. Cow Pattys need to be about 60 to 90 days old for the produce fruit..
With out a constant supply of new fresh dung the Cubes and other Dung loving Mushrooms will slowly fade away... The pattys can settle down into the ground and still produce Cubes but the nutrients will quickly be absorbed and will not be able to support new growth..

My 2 cents
