how easy are salvia plants to take care of in your own home?
    #5344880 - 02/27/06 10:58 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

obviously with the recent media salvia has gotten because of that kid killing himself...

it was recently that he killed himself correct?

we need to prepare for the future of not being able to buy salvia online eventually.

so we have to move to the option of growing it in our own house.

how easy is it to keep a plant like this alive?

does it require the whole setup that it calls for to grow weed?

how do you determin the potency of the live plants you would grow?

from what I've read its a low maintenance plant. You should be able to keep it like a regular house plant since it has low lighting requirements... It wont produce seeds so if you want to propagate it further you are going to have to take cuttings...

I'm planning on getting a few myself very soon. Fuck them. I'll fight for my freedom.

hell yeah!

how do you figure out the potency of the plant that you have?

is there a general rule of thumb?

Don't quote me but I thought it was about 2.5mg/1gm on average, though there is probably infinate variables, fertilizers, light, TLC, etc.

I've had a plant for the last five years, they can take a lot of abuse once established. Over-watering and bugs seem to be the #1 killer.

MCGS testing will be the only means to accurately determine potency.

Hey, about your name. Is it from the African agouti?

And do you find Salvia to be a 'teacher plant'?

I am setting up an ethnobotanical garden of sorts in a few months, and I have set aside room for at least a couple S. divinorum plants. As McKenna once said,

"I don't know if you've noticed, but they aren't exactly handing out rights in this country. Ask a black person, ask a member of any sexual minority, ask a native American. They aren't giving away rights, you have to take them."

Well said. :peace:

its not that hard of a plant to take care of, but usually by the time you recieve it via some form of shipping from online, the plant has been through hell and back. its like reviving an E.R. patient, but once it gets back on its feet its pretty easy. im sure in all cases though you wont always recieve a plant in such poor condition.

"its like reviving an E.R. patient"

Exactly. Try to get it rooted if you can. It roots quickly, but it's in no state to spend the time when all it's leaves are falling off. They're quite easy to keep alive. But to get them looking healthy is beyond me. Hopefully after it reaches a foot or so it will really take off.

Humidity is the key early on.

Good question. I never hear much about actual harvesting of the plant without doing it any harm. Most people probably just let it die, then rape it's 10 leaves. :frown:

I have 3 actually, they're doing quite well. Growth just seems pretty slow, and for a while they looked quite on the sad side.

the majority of the leaves I get to collect comes from making cuttings, or when I unintentionally neglect them and a few leaves fall off. I've picked leaves without cutting before, but you might as well just make a cutting and take the leaves from the bottom node.

All in all, salvia is an easy plant to care for. I mist twice a day. During the spring/summer I keep them outside in the shade, during fall/winter they are grown under an hps indirectly. They grow kinda slow under the hps but still stay healthy. Outside is a different story.

Be careful once salvia becomes illegal. No one will recognize it, but cops tend to think any tall leafy plant is pot. A few funny/sad stories in the news section about cops who think sunflowers and other plants are cannabis, and raid people's homes.

Thanks.  For whatever reason mine always seem to put on a majority of their growth in the winter when the humidity is down, the temps are cooler, and the weather is a little more cloudy.  Strange creatures.  She's a Blosser strain btw.  I gave up misting a long time ago, just didn't find it necessary.  Sorry guys, I had a major aphid attack last fall and won't have any cuttings to trade this spring :frown:

I believe the plant pictured is about 8 months, and I think it would be reasonable to harvest at least five new plants and 1.5-2 oz per year, probly a lot more if grown outdoors.

Someone once told me 'underwatering is better than over-watering' remember that and you're golden.  Its usually just the first month or so after planting a new cutting that your chances of losing her are high (north and west windows are no good).  Good air circulation is a big help too.  I've had some Sallies that didn't 'take off' for 4-5 months, they have their own agendas :tongue2:

I've heard good things about using petunias for ridding your plants of bugs, sticky strips if you can find them and also putting a thick layer of perlite (not sure why) over the top of their soil has helped me before.  Warning:  Bone meal was what got me into the whole bug mess.  Go Naked Lunch on their little bug asses

My prefered dose for when I really want to break through (or come close anyways) is three big tokes (with no breaths in between) off from a non-standardized 9x alcohol extraction.

The extract is very easy to make, it only takes about 30 minutes to make + waiting overnight for it to evaportate.

My most profound experience with salvia happened off from one large leaf.  I was laying on the bathroom floor and became part of a forest with frog-people and a Mary Poppins lady all dancing and singing around me.

I have broke through with a teaspoon of crushed plain leaves using water pipe before as well.

Its all about your setting and awareness I guess.  Smoking around a campfire or a river would be nothing at all like smoking on a couch in my opinion. They both have their advantages though.

I think I'm too stoned to be on the computer right now, so I hope I answered your question :stoned:

Yeah, I get grossed out by the taste and texture though. I worked with tinctures for awhile, those are niiiice.

The tinctures I had were from sagewisdom, I never was able to make a good one just by using alcohol. I believe you would have to do a non-polar solvent extraction to get a close to pure product and then dilute that with alcohol.

so i assume you don't bother extracting from just a few leaves...
do you harvest a whole plant worth for extractions?
or do you simply collect leaves over time?

Koolio - I have got good effects from chewing dried leaves too, actually find it more pleasant than the fresh leaves.

1. Wet the leaves in a bowl of water.
2. Brush teeth and insides of mouth roughly to open some membranes.
3. Rinse well with scope.

simisu - You'd be surprised what a few leaves can add up to, especially if you're only smoking once or twice a moon. My leaves are always HUGE, bigger than a hand from finger tip to wrist, and wide as the palm.  Much bigger than the little crisps that I have seen in online bags.  Maybe mature leaves produce higher concentrations of salvinorin?  Look closely at all the crystals on this leaf.

It is by no means necessary to harvest a whole plant at a time but I do.  Typically they are collected over time, the leaves will yellow-up and fall off, but if you have space limitations and like to give out cuttings that's when the big collection happens.

Its amazing to me that these plants work their whole lives just to give us a little healing

I believe that growing and blessing our own plants takes us one step closer to understanding their lessons.

when i come across a clone of my own i imagine i'll work hard on cloning it as much as i can (to have at least 4 plants at all times)
that way mother plants are kept from harm and clones can be harvested after a while or given away!

so i guess when/if i want a smoke i can always take from the clones...
i think i like the idea of growing salvia better then smoking it
