Flashing Your Headlights
    #5344688 - 02/27/06 09:55 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

When you pass a stopped cop car, that is searching for speeders, do you flash your lights to alert the oncoming drivers about it? Or does flashing your headlights mean something else where you are from?

I'm from Texas, and I do it (after I pass the cop car). Although I don't speed much, and I've rarely seen it in action, it has saved me from a potential ticket once. It's probably illegal since it takes from their quota (and money spent for traps, etc.), but I still do it. Hopefully the drivers aren't being TOO reckless with their speed though, if so...then they probably need to be stopped for everyone's safety.

It's really illegal where I live, but its kept me out of a few roadbloacks.

If the cop is allready busy writing a ticket then someone else is in no real danger of getting chased down by him... unless they're doing 90mph on surface streets or some such.

I flash my lights when someone in front of me is doing 30 in a 45 zone. Or when someone sees me coming down the road at the speed limit (or usually 5 over  ) and they pull out in front of me and decide to putz along at half the speed limit.

Ugh, isn't it the worst? It's especially bad on the highway.

I don't know if people do it intentionally, or they're just ignorant?

Did you ever feel like, out of everyone on the road, you are the only one who knows how to drive correctly?

That's how I feel..

Sorry, to stray off topic there, it's just a huge pet-peeve of mine. But to keep up with the thread, I do flash my lights at on coming cars if I Pass a cop, that is if i'm not the one already pulled over.  :smirk:

if its a cop trying to bust people speeding by sitting and gunning people I will flash my lights for sure. I have been saved by people doing that in the past. And I like to thumb my nose at the man.

I don't know about you all but If im allready going 5-10 miles over the speed limit, and somebody gets beind me expecting me to get over, I don't budge. Im not going to speed so that I can pass the car next to me and get over and get a ticket so you can drive a hundred miles an hour on the freeway....

the only time I've ever been pulled over i got a speeding ticket for 94 in a 70, state tried to get my license taken away for a year, after that I don't speed very often.

I never go more than 5 mph over anyway. I hate being pulled, I'm not fond of talking to cops... and if I see one lurking about trying to nab people, I flash my lights. I consider that common courtesy.

I turn my light off then back on.

Or if its daytime, I flash em.

People doing this has saved me at least twice.

Yeah I try to help out

However, can it can be construed as obstruction of justice if another cop sees you do this?

You could say you were reaching for something and accidentally hit the light switch. Then you could tell him to go fight some real crime.

Yeah, that makes sense..

But in my town, real crime is basically non-existent.  A black guy walking down the street is highly suspicious here :frown:

A friend and I were discussing this the other week. I always flash my lights when cops have a speed trap set up. But the problem is, flashing your lights could mean so many things: there's a cop ahead; there are deer ahead, be careful; hello; or it could just be an accidental brush of the light switch.

Nobody around here does anything like that -in this area they would probably be glad to see you get busted. The only time they flash lights is if they're pissed off at you for some reason.
