I apologize if this has been covered,
I cannot seem to get my hands on a consistant amount of shoulderless jars or containers made of glass, I do have plenty of varient size mason jars but they unfortunatly have shoulders- am I asking for more trouble than its worth to use a shoulderd device or is it possible to extract the cake despite marring it up a bit to get it out of there?
I also have some 1/4 pint small jars that might work, will there be comparable results if I downsize the measurmeants for these guys?

You can use those small jars just fine for BRF cakes.
However I suggest you read on how to use grains and casing, because you can use any old jars for grains, since you crumble the grain anyways, as opposed to fruiting them as whole cakes.

A 1/4 pint would make a very small cake.
If you want you can make a Pf cake mix and put it into a shouldered jar. But once it's colonized you will have to dig it out with a spoon or knife, crumble it and case it. You get a slightly better yield from casing anyways.
If you have a pressure cooker you should look into doing grains. They aren't that hard.

Well somepeople like to use tapered drinking glasses.
I've also heard of and seen, bowls, cake pans, cassarole dishes, galdware/ziplock tubs, and deli tubs.
You can use the shouldered jars.......just plan on fighting to get the substrate out, and don't plan on continuing the fungi's life as a cake, rather try learning some techniques on casing. Since the cake will come out broken up it makes sense to case it as most casings involve a lot of crumbling of th ecake anyways.....

alright, gonna check out casing, as long as I have a good layer of perlite on top of the substrate, does it really matter if the jar is a lil roomy?

You gotta read more holmes. There's no perlite involved in casings unless it's your preferred method of humidity for your terrarium. And jars have nothing to do with casing. So yeah.. read more on casing then see if you still have questions.

oh no, I didn't mean casing, I meant during the initial colonization- there is a layer of perlite ontop of the bulk substrate to block out contams, but if I stick with the half-pint recipe Im gonna have some room between the lid and the substrate, is it important to have as little air in there as possible, or is the usual perlite layer enough?

You use a dry vermiculite layer not perlite.
You need to be able to get the needle of your syringe BELOW the dry verm layer. So the bottom of the verm layer really can't more then an inch below the top of the jar. That's assuming your using 1 1/2" inch needles.
Of course the dry verm layer could be skiped and a filter lid could be used in place. Don't look past grains just yet.

You're confusing perlite with vermiculite.
