Put a wierd title so that people searching can find this cause it took me ages to find it
Basically you can use a ATX power suply unit just fine to run as many fans as you like
What you have to do it cross the 14 pin in most cases with any of the black ground wires.
First of all here is the label thats on your PSU, it will chance completely from psu to psu especially american to european

What stays the same is the word GROUND and the word PS-ON ... there the two your interested in ...
Most american psu's are this colouring
Here is a list of leads on a 20 pin connector,
PIN COLOR NAME DESCRIPTION ------------------------------------ 1 Orange +3.3V Power, +3.3V 2 Orange +3.3V Power, +3.3V 3 Black GND Ground 4 Red +5V Power, +5V 5 Black GND Ground 6 Red +5V Power, +5V 7 Black GND Ground 8 Gray PWR-OK Power OK 9 Purple +5V VSB +5V VSB 10 Yellow +12V Power, +12V 11 Orange +3.3V Power, +3.3V 12 Blue -12V Power, -12V 13 Black GND Ground 14 Green PS-ON PS Remote on/off 15 Black GND Ground 16 Black GND Ground 17 Black GND Ground 18 White -5V Power, -5V 19 Red +5V Power, +5V 20 Red +5V Power, +5V
And this is a list of leads on a 24 pin connector,
PIN COLOR NAME DESCRIPTION ------------------------------------ 1 Orange +3.3V Power, +3.3V 2 Orange +3.3V Power, +3.3V 3 Black GND Ground 4 Red +5V Power, +5V 5 Black GND Ground 6 Red +5V Power, +5V 7 Black GND Ground 8 Gray PWR-OK Power OK 9 Purple +5V VSB +5V VSB 10 Yellow +12V Power, +12V 11 Yellow +12V Power, +12V 12 Orange +3.3V Power, +3.3V 13 Orange +3.3V Power, +3.3V 14 Blue -12V Power, -12V 15 Black GND Ground 16 Green PS-ON PS Remote on/off 17 Black GND Ground 18 Black GND Ground 19 Black GND Ground 20 White -5V Power, -5V 21 Red +5V Power, +5V 22 Red +5V Power, +5V 23 Red +5V Power, +5V 24 Black GND Ground
So for mine the grey one was the PS-ON and ANY black one at all is the ground
so i took out a black wire and squashed down the metal part at the top with a Pliers so that it isnt as wide but still the same lenght

see the gap beside the grey was a black one and i cut it out so i didnt wreck the metal part

After squashing the metal part at the top it fit into the grey connection

Its in about a half an inch and is very tight thats the way you want it
Make sure there is no power going to it while your working on it and then connect a heat sink fan to it

once you have this connected then get an extension lead that has a switch or if theres a switch on your psu thats even better ... plug it in with the switch on off and then get a wooden stick or anything thats wooden and use that to flick the switch on hahaha so at least if you fucked up you wont kill yourself you will just short the fuse and off it goes
I am in NO WAY at all an electrician and this is litteraly just something ive read from other posts and ive put together i take no responsibility for this and id like someone that knows something about electricity to tell me if this is safe
Another way of doing this would be to cut the grey/green PS-ON wire and cut any black wire and peel back some of the insulation and then wrap the two wires around each other and then cover up with insulation tape.
AND DO NOT PUT THE PSU into your fruiting chamber! only put the fan, and do not have the wires in a way that moisture could run down fromt he wires coming out of the FC onto the psu ... you could put the psu higher then the fc.
im connecting two fans to this and putting them in my FC today and have them on for 5-10 minutes every 2-3 hours.

You can also get female 4 pin molex connector kits if your fan just has bare wires. Then you use one of the 4 wire leads off the power supply. Allows you to select a slower fan speed.
Wire/Position 4 +5 volts Wire/Position 3 Ground for 5 volts (0 volts) Wire/Position 2 Ground for 12 volts (0 volts) Wire/Position 1 +12 volts
If you use 5 volt positive and 5 volt common u get 5 volts. If you use the 12 volt positive and the 5 volt ground you will get 7 volts. If you use the 12 volt positive and 12 volt ground you get 12 volts.
Three speeds to choose from and you dont have to mess with the big ass connector.
