i am interested in buying a microscope for mycology... i would want to be able to identify contams with it but would also like to take my studies further in the future... when it comes to microscopes i do not know where to start, any input on microscopes features and types what so ever would be highly appreciated. thanks

Check out the student microscopes to get started. I also have the relatively inexpensive stereo microscope http://www.microscopesusa.com/Vision.html and honestly use it more than the lab microscopes. It's great for examining gill structure, and you can also ID most contaminants with it. I also have the more expensive M2 with cctv camera attachment, but other than checking for clamp connections, I rarely get that one out. RR

shop around as much as you can, lab auctions, ebay, pretty much everywhere, call universities and ask if they sell off old lab equipment, I shopped for more than a year, read quite a bit and found, most are pretty well standardized in regards to occular and objective lens interchangability, older microscopes seldom are.
most come with a 10x eyepiece, you can always pick up stronger ones like a 16x I purchased this one, 4 extra 16x eye pieces, a color camera, and several other accessories I felt I may need, I lucked up on a stage micrometer and reticle dirt cheap. the microscope cost me less than $300 shipped, the accessories cost me an extra $200...
read a little (lot) before you buy and search like hell
