Noob Pressure Cooker Question
    #5338738 - 02/25/06 06:26 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

I've prepared my substrate jars for sterilization and have a pressure cooker. Is masking tape sufficient over the holes punched in the lids to keep water out of the jars? Should I use foil too? I'm using the "The Magic Mushrooms Grower s Guide" but it doesn't go into too much detail on pressure cooker use. Thanks for the help!

Most people only use one or two layers of foil. Masking tape won't hurt anything, but it isn't necessary. When my jars are cool after being in the pressure cooker, I want to be able to just pop off the foil, inoculate the jars, and then put a bandaid over the inoculation hole. I like bandaids because they are sterile in the package.

one layer of foil over the lid going down to the upper portion of the jar is all you need. Press it as tight as you can around the jar lid and place it in the PC.

I tried the foil with poor results. All but three of my jars(I started with a dozen) appear to have taken on excess moisture. Following are pictures of a good jar:

And here's what most of them look like:

I put two layers of heavy duty foil around the tops of the jars. It went about halfway down the side of the jar and I sealed it on there as best I could. I also only used about an inch or two of water, so I know that didn't cause the problem. I'm assuming that these jars are all worthless?

well the only way that moisture could be getting in is
A shitty foil
B shitty jar
C Bad seal

shitty foil prolly not... mabye bad jars... but most likely you need to make a better seal around the tinfoil, try using more rubber bands and tighter

Are you using lids under that foil? LOL just kidding, how nmuch water are you using in the PC (depth?).

2 inches in the pressure cooker.

The tin foil is heavy duty stuff. It's a lot stiffer than the normal stuff we use around the house. Maybe that was the problem. I really thought I made a good seal though... I even pushed the jar up against the edge of the counter and rolled it around to get it as tight as possible against the jar. I didn't use rubber bands. That would have been a good idea.

I'm doing another batch with masking tape over the holes and they're cooling now. Hope that solves the problem...
