Common newbie Q & A
    #5338692 - 02/25/06 06:11 PM (18 years, 26 days ago)

Why don't we as a community try to figure out a list of the most common newbie questions.(with obvious short correct answers.)

Then, make a list of the top 20, 30, 50, or how-ever-many (+/-).

Along with straight forward short simple answers.

Then, compile those Q & A's into a single Common Q & A list.
(possibly categorized)

Then, post that as a sticky here, or in the FAQ.

Which, would at least give others a place to refer those general newbie questions to.
Rather than answering them at length, over & over again, year in & year out.

I will try to get the ball rolling, BY THE NUMBERS.

For instance:

1. Q, "does VERMICULITE, contains ASBESTOS?".
(NO).

2. Q, "which strain of P. Cubensis is best?"
(all a matter of opinion)

3. Q, "is bat guano in substrate - good?"
(NO)

4. Q, "Do I need a PC, for grains?"
(only alternative is fractional sterilization)

5. Q, "which vendor is best?"
(all a matter of opinion)

6. Q, "Can I just microwave grains?"
(you can, but it seldom, if ever works)

7. Q, "which casing mixture is best?"
(all a matter of experience & preference)

8. Q, "can I substitute Perlite for Verm in the PF tek?"
(no, at least not effectively)

9. Q, "what will 3 cakes yield?"
(nothing, some, a lot, it all depends)

10. Q, "which Vendor here, will ship spores to CA, GA, ID?"
(none)

This is a good idea agar.

Q, " Does a food dehydrator cause potency loss?"
(No. Anything under 400 ?F does not cause potency loss.)

Q, " Why are my PF jars stalled? I am not seeing any growth"
(It could be a bunch of things. Most commonly, your substrate is either too dry or too wet. Your substrate should be pretty moist, but not saturated. Another common error is leaving the tape over the holes in your lid while your jars are in the incubator. You need to allow for CO2 produced by the growing mycelium to escape the jar. The tape blocks the air from going in/out. If you are following the PF Tek, the vermiculite layer on top of your substrate should be an effective filter against contamination.)

13.) Will human/animal poo/feces/hair/other nasty shit work as substrate?
"nope"

14.)What is better cow or horse poo?
"horse, cows have 4 stomach's and therefore digest more of the nutrients"

15.)What temps should my FC/TiT be set at?
"74-76 is optimal for fruiting 84-86 optimal for incubation"

16.)How long does it take to grow?
"Start to finish on average about 25-30 days"

17.) Help, whats this purple/black shit on my caps?
"spore deposits from your mushrooms"

18.)Do i need to use a pressure cooker?
"No, you can boil jars with the PF tek, higher rate of contams using this method however"

19.)How many CC's should i use per jar
"In a standard PF jar .25 CC's per innoc hole.  In a quart grain jar 1-2 cc's"

20.)Why are my mushrooms so small?
"thin substrate layers, poor genetics, lack of nutrients, or a heavy pinset can cause your mushrooms to grow small"

21.)When should i harvest my mushrooms?
"For asthetic purposes people like to pick before, or right after, the veil tears.  For printing purposes its best to let the cap flatten out.  It doesnt matter when you harvest your mushrooms as long as you pick them before they rot"

22.)Some mushrooms are growing faster then others, what should i do?
"Take a scissor and cut the caps off the fast guys, this will allow the smaller ones to mature without the big ones spewing spores over your grow."

23.)Whats dunking and rolling?
"this is technique to rehydrate your cakes and provide adequate moisture through fruiting.  Simply submerge a cake for 24 hrs under water then roll in dry verm."

24.)How long will my syringes/prints last?
"stored in a cool dry place spores will keep for years"

25.)How long will PC'ed jars keep?
"A properly sterlized jar will remain clean for months"

26.)help its been 3 hrs since i inooculated, why is there no growth?
"It takes up to 4 days to see signs of germination, then another 2 weeks til full colonization.  Patience is key"

27.)Whats this white fuzzy stuff at the base of my stem?
"Mycellium from being in a high RH environment"

28.)How do i create a more even, stronger, pinset?
A pinning strategy

29.)Are growkits worth it?
"Almost always no, you can build your own setup for much cheaper"

30.)Can i obtain spores from dried mushrooms?
"Not really, you're much better off buying your own"

31.)My hygrometer never gets higher then X%, why?
"Most hygromters are garbage, most likely so is yours.  If using perlite when properly hydrated you will acheive 90+% humidity"

thats all i can think of right now, im sure ill come back with a bunch more heheh

After the top 25-30-50 (however many) questions with solid answers are picked what do you think should be done with that list? Make it an official FAQ contribution? Sticky? I think the best thing that could be done is have it part of the registration process.

Agar and coda seem to get most of them. The only other I can think of is.

Q-Can Perlite be substituted for vermiculite (vise versa)?
A- NO, each have unique properties and have separate uses for mushroom cultivation.

Q- What's polyfil and where can I find it?
A- It is also called Polyester fiber filling. It is made from polyester it is a synthetic stuffing used in pillows and stuffed animals.

Q- What is Tyvek and where can I find it?
A- Tyvek is made from very fine, high-density polyethylene fibers, Tyvek is strong; vapor-permeable, yet water-, chemical-, puncture-, tear- and abrasion-resistant. FedEx priority envelopes are made from tyvek and can be found at postal outlets or FedEx drop off boxes for free.

Excellent idea

Q: How much light should they get?
A: Light only tells the mycelium it's at the surface. Mushrooms can grow with a 24/7 light source, or several minutes a day. Ideally, you want them give them somewhere in between.

(Not sure what the most common preference is, the answer could be tweaked)

Q: what type of light source should I use?
A: Just about any light source can be used, though lights in the red spectrum should be avoided. Soft daylight filtered through blinds is sufficient.

Q: Why are my cakes turning blue?
A: This is bruising, and is common after the first flush.

Q: What does pasteurization mean?
A: Pasteurization is a low temperature sterilization that takes place between 140 and 180 degrees.

Q: What does WBS, TiT, BRF, FC (mental block, add other acronyms) mean?
A: Wild Bird Seed, Tub in Tub, Brown Rice Flour, Fruiting Chamber, etc.

Going along with the acronyms, an index of terms might be a good idea: hyphal knot, primordia, veil, rhizomorph, stipe, etc. You could get really crazy and add more common terms such as: vermiculite, perlite, polyfil, tyvek, coir, sphagnum peat, reed sedge peat, oyster shell, calcium carbonate, magnesium, nitrogen, straw, hpoo, in-vitro, casing layer, substrate, bulk, etc.

I must add during pinning 12-16hrs. of light is optimum for maximum pin count.

"Q: Why are my cakes turning blue?
A: This is bruising, and is common after the first flush."
Also cakes often turn blue from lack of moisture.

Q: How thick should my substract be?
A: Most people do between 3-5 inches thick.

Q: How thick should my casing Layer be?
A: The casing layer should be 1/4 the size of the substract.

Q: Can I use rollaids or tums in place of calcium Carbonate?
A: No, because most anti-acid tablets contain sugar which opens you up to contams.

2 a. Q, "but seriously, which strain of P. Cubensis is best for beginners?"
(all a matter of opinion)

2 b. Q, "OK. Which strain do you think is best?"
(the best one for me)

Q. Does dung stink when you pasteurize it?
A. Most people find that it smells earthy. It's something to do in your home or well-ventilated apartment.

Q. Why don't you sterilize dung?
A. Most people don't sterilize it to keep the helpful bacteria alive. If you sterilize it you kill these off and the dung will be more suceptible to contaminations.

Q. Do black lights help cakes and casings pin?
A. Black lights cause mutations.

Q. is Miracle-Grow (or any chemical garden fertilizer) a good thing to add to a cake or bulk substrate?
A. No, it will throw off the balance of existing organic nutrients.

Q.Which is a better sanitizing agent, 70% or 90% alcohol?
A. 70% alc is more effective, it evaporates slower.

Q.What is an optimal spawn to substrate ratio?
A.20% spawn to 80% substrate. (even more - is better).

Q. What is the best syringe needle bore & length?
A. 18 gauge 1.5 inch is standard.

Q. Is a clear "spore" syringe bunko?
A. If it is an Shroomery "Vendor" spore syringe, it's good.

Q. What is the best USA brand pressure cooker?
A. All American is Top of the Line (expensive).

Q. What size pressure cooker is best?
A. One that will hold quart jars, the bigger the better.

Good job people.
This is sure to help filter our board a bit...

Q. Why are my mushrooms turning blue.
A. It's caused by bruising.

Q. How do I increase the potency of my shrooms?
A. Adding more nutrients to the substrate. IE:(WBS-h/poo/compost as opposed to BRF)

Q. What is the best way to dry my shrooms?
A. Food dehydrator, or fan dry them and then put them into a desiccant(Damp-rid)chamber until cracker dry.

Q. Why do my shrooms look all deformed?
A Deformation(mutations) are caused by genetics and often foreign chemicals such as Lysol and h202.

Q. How long can I store shrooms?
A. In a cool dark place they will stay preserved for as long as years.

Q. Whats the best way to introduce magic mushrooms outdoors?
A. .......

Thats all I could come up with at the moment...please point out anything that may be incorrect.

Above was caused by DRAMATIC fluctuations in RH.

Once "CRACKER DRY", optimal storage is in a air tight, or vacuum sealed container.
(because it does not allow dried fruits to absorb moisture from outside air).

Q. how can I tell which h/poo is best to gather?

A. Preferably, unadulterated well weathered h/poo that still has a very high fiber consistency, that has no ammonia, or fecal like smell. It should smell about like good garden soil.

I was thinking of compiling information and doing the same thing. Glad someone stepped up and is going to make it happen, thanks.
One of the problems for alot of the ppl asking the same question is that they don't search the threads. This may be due to a techincal learning curve but I think it's because their is too much information that isn't organized.

Perhaps their should be a 'newbie cultivation help' forum broken down into sub-threads:
Acronyms and Definitions, (locked and updated by mods)
Equipment and where to get it, (locked and updated by mods)
How to use your equipment, (locked and updated by mods)
Supplies and where to get it, (too dynamic to be locked, open thread)
How to use your supplies(specific uses of tyvek, PCs, etc.), (locked)
Techniques(links to the existing cultivation techniques), (locked)
Common symptoms of problems and how to solve them, (locked and updated)
Newbie questions and anwers(active thread for the noobie questions to be posted).

Then make a sticky thread in the main cultivation forum called "Newbie Help basic Q&A", put a link to the newbie cultivation forum, and lock the thread.

To repeat: The newbies that ask the same questions are asking them because the answer isn't in front of their faces. Unorganized TMI.

Make 15 or 20 prints on a sheet of glass.
Do not worry about sterility, at all.

Scrape dried prints off glass with a razor blade.
Store in a small bottle.

In the early spring (after threat of frost has passed), in applicable areas (around hay & dung/manure piles, along pasture ditch lines, in/around horse/cow pastures, etc).

Use a females facial make/up brush.

Dip in spore bottle & paint applicable area's with spores & lightly cover with damp humus material, around each local & spot.

Use survey flagging to mark the spots.

Only other way is to scatter colonized wbs spawn, same as above.

There IS something in the "mushroom cultivation" section of shroomery regarding extracting psilocybin from mycelium:
http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/7998

Could this not potentially work with liquid mycelium?
Sorry, I know this isn't a "newbie answer" to a "newbie question"... I'm just hypothesizing.

Long time back, I made an 8 gallon LC in a 10 gallon glass carboy.

The solution was stirred with a large stir bar.
It was also aerated (ulpa filtered) with a small lab air pump.

It grew thick as I could get it.

Once it reached the point of matting on the surface.
I filtered out the myc, & dried it at 85F.

Then, split the results with 4 peep's for bio-assay.

One got a tiny buzz, the other 3 got nothing.

I repeated the experiment about 4 times, using differing nutrients.

Same results, with differing doses & people.

Last try, after it was thick, I exposed the carboy to 24 hour grow lights, for a week.

That seemed to increase the actives by about 10%.

And, I am talking about eating a coffee cup full.

All in all, testers never got even near the effect they would from a single gram of good dried cubes.

That was the end of my fiddling around with it.

This thread is awesome, but the same people that didn't bother to read the FAQ or RK's "Read this before posting" thread probably aren't going to take the time to read through this one. If the answer to their question doesn't magically appear right in front of them after a whole 30 seconds of searching, they'll post anyway. Then you'll also get the "Well, I know I read that you should do it like this, but I want to know what you guys think?" crowd.

That's an excellent idea, it's just that we already had this idea 3 years ago, and it resulted in the creation of the Shroomery Cultivation FAQ, where most of those questions are already answered.

You are more than welcome to propose and work out new ones of course and submit them in the FAQ Contributions forum.

Is anything wrong with this approach? Searching and finding information?

Screw searching for answers for a long time. I am also a newb, and sometimes time is of the essence. Also, sometime some of the "answerer questions" that are in here are either bogus, or incomplete. If there was a list of a bunch of FAQ's, some newbs would find the search feature obsolete, given that the FAQ is well done and thourough. I think you should also add a bunch of sterilization tips and hints, as I know a LOT of newbs fuck up this way. Thats just my 2 cents though...

dood, i dont understand whats so hard about being sterile. Wipe your counters down, clean them off with a disinfectent, spray an aersol disinfectant, and your done. If you want to become more sterile build a GB or a flow hood.

People make waaaaay too much out of being sterile, unless you're willing to risk contams on open air transfers and agar work, you dont need to be ultra sterile.

This Q+A is great, i havent found one bogus answer yet, and all the answers provide a short and sweet answer.

No, I think you misunderstand. I know how to properly sterilize, but there are some poeple out there who don't really grasp the concept. Also, I know this Q & A is helping out people a load. I was just trying to add to it. I was trying to speak for the newbs who waste their time trying a million different ideas before even completing a grow, beginning to end. I think this FAQ is a GREAT idea and I'd rather see it get well written up, without all of the posts and be placed somewhere where it's easily accesable, not just thrown in the archive for people to have to search for it time and time again. Great idea though, Agar

Actually, to tell you the truth, I did not read your post until now. And I also went BACK to the FAQ page and the FAQ contribution page. Yes, I know most questions are already there in that forum, but the answers are not easily accessable. You have to search through pages and pages to find an answer you were looking for. Maybe if one BIG FAQ page was made, MAYBE divided into subtopics, people would be able to find their answers more easily, instead of trying to search through pages and pages. I mean no hostility towards you dude, Im just trying to throw some ideas in there, as I thought this website was founded on.

What Im trying to say is yes there is already a FAQ page. But I think that Agar has a good idea, trying to set up a page that is easier to find answere. Just because something is already there, doesn't mean that it can't be changed or improved.

True, the object here is to try to gather/compile the top 50 (or so) commonly asked SIMPLE newbie questions, then provide short cons ice simple answers.

Once it gets that far. I will compile them & submit it for consideration to admin, for inclusion in the FAQ.

It seems to me, it would be a WORTHWHILE READ for newbies.
Because it would answer the bulk of Q's most newbies ask.

Also, it would/should/could serve as a space & time saving feature.
Because if the newbies get the top 50 common Q's answered, all on a single page. It would save a million newbies the time of hunting for, or asking the same old questions, over & over & over & over - again

It would also serve as a useful link, for old hands to direct newbies to, for answers to those common Q's.

Makes sense to me, anyway.

Q: Can Coco-Coir be used as a substrate?
A: Yes, it has nutes in it, and will colonize quickly when spawned to.

Q: Can Coco-coir be used as a casing layer?
A: Yes, but tend to stay away, because of the fact that it has nutes in it, and will tend to overly. Using Peat is is better IMO

Q: I got a 50# bag of crushed oyster shells can i add this to my casing layer?
A: yes, but most likely will not affect or lower ph any. Oyster shells need to be powdered like flour. using "chips" most likely will not add anything to the casing layer.

A. Most people find that it smells earthy. It's something to do in your home or well-ventilated apartment.

Q. Why don't you sterilize dung?
A. Most people don't sterilize it to keep the helpful bacteria alive. If you sterilize it you kill these off and the dung will be more susceptible to contaminations.

Q. Do black lights help cakes and casings pin?
A. Black lights cause mutations.

After pasteurization is a cheese smell normal, what would cause it?

This makes sense to me too, particularly if you also link to the existing FAQ for a more comprehensive answer, since not many questions can be sufficiently answered with only one sentence.

Q: What is the best kind of mushroom to grow?

A: There are several different strains of cubensis mushrooms available, each with their unique set of characteristics. Just like there are many different kinds of dogs, each specializing in intelligence, size, friendliness, etc., the strains of cubensis have their own genetic dispositions that some growers favor over others.

These genetic traits can be found in many of the spore vendors websites or a discussion of strains can be found in this thread (insert thread here).

Each grower has to determine what they are looking to get out of the shroom and pick the strain with those characteristics. It is important to realize that while different dogs have various characteristics, they will never be a cat, and all cubensis mushrooms are similar in this sense and there is no super-shroom that does it all. It does make for interesting debate though so go read.

Q: What is the easiest, stealthiest, most foolproof thing to grow, requiring minimal equipment yet still give a decent yeild?

A: Sclerotia

Q: Can I microwave substrate to sterilize it?

A: Yes, but it is difficult and has a high failure rate if you do not know what you are doing. It is better and easier to invest in a pressure cooker to avoid disappointment and wasted time/substrate/spores.

A. 70% alc is more effective, it evaporates slower.

i was just reading in a microbiology book that th reason the alcohol is diluted instead of pure alcohol is when you feed a cell the water it's like sending in a trojan horse. the cell accepts the water in the solution and then gets attacked with alcohol neutralizing it.

i was reading in the same book that the only reason microwave sterilization works is beacuse the water in the substrate creates live steam which in turn kills everything off.

Q: Where do I get vermiculite?
A: Use your phonebook, call your local Lowes, farm stores, gardening stores and ask them if they have it. If they say no, ask them if they know where to get it now.

Q: What is the best pressure cooker?
A: All American brand pressure cookers. You probably want at least the 21 quart size. Check your local thrift stores.

Q: Will cheap pressure cookers work?
A: Yes, just make sure it has a pressure gauge.

Q: What does FAE, Rh, FC, TiT, Myc, pH, PmP, etc. etc. mean?
A: Check the definitions page(followed by a link to it once we get it all compiled and posted).

Q: Can I use cow manure instead of horse manure in my cakes or for my bulk substrate?
A: Yes, but it won't be as good as horse manure.

Q: What is the difference between using perlite and vermiculite?
A: Perlite does not retain as much moisture as vermiculite. They each have their use. Consult the tek you are following.

Q: What teks are used to get the most potency?
A: Mycellium grown on grains and then spawned to a manure based substrate.

Q: Sometimes mushrooms from the same batch are alot larger or smaller. Why?
A: Usually the first flush has the greatest numbers of mushrooms starting to form. All those mushrooms are competing for nutrients and water. This leads to smaller mushrooms. The 2nd and 3rd flushes will have less, but larger mushrooms.

But! I do have one thing that I would appreciate being awnsered.

Could someone please post a timeline of how much sunlight your shrooms will need?

For instance

etc.

Nice work Agar:thumbup:
Alot of great information from all of you!
Single one line answers are sometimes the best way to nurture a growing Newbie mind. Categorizing these topics will make it better. I had found that in my searching of information when I started this site it wasn't Newbie friendly at all. That didn't stop me however, I just kept lurking and searching and PM'ing for assistance. It's sort of like having a younger sibling and they ask lots of questions to they're big brother finally says "stop buggin'! and find out for yourself...!"
The Scavenger Hunt was also a useful tool of knowledge as it took me places that had a variety of answers. (Some of which are a matter of opinion), but nonetheless good information! Good golly it took me some time just to find the Glossary!
Keep brainstorming here folks it will lead to updating information for this site, which can only be a positive growth! :2cents:

At the risk of sounding stupid here i go, I've been looking at pictures and I've noticed every ones terrariums have some kind of medium on the bottom, some times white some times looks like dirt.
I was just going to put my rice Patty's on a wire mesh to keep them off the floor of my terrarium, and use a ultrasonic humidifier. will this still work?

Newbie Question...

Q.Using PF Tek, Dunk then case or case then dunk?

My understanding is that dunking helps the cake know its time to fruit. However, if you are making a casing you want it to grow with the casing then fruit. ??

A. No clue, but I'm sure a lots of folks do

Well, threads like this are why I have almost no posts; which is the point, I guess. I'm a little bit experienced with growing, but this thread answered (or pointed me in the right direction) many things for me.

Here's a question: My half-pint cakes are colonizing twice as fast as expected. That's a good thing, right?

California, Georgia, and maybe one other state I think have laws against spores. If you were really dedicated to getting spores sent to you you could set up a PO box in an adjacent state that doesn't have those laws.

Or if you have friends in another state that wouldn't mind having the spores shipped to them from the vendor, and then shipping them on to you...

Nope, spores are illegal in the state of California and Georgia by state statute.

Edit: Aha, and idaho. Thanks agar, totally forgot that one.

Q: I've read/imagined that condensation(moisture) on the walls of my terrarium(fruiting chamber) is a good sign that I have enough humidity.
IS THIS TRUE?

A: No. Condensation is an indicator of differing temperatures.
When you get a glass of ice water and it gets condensation on the outside of it, does that mean your house is at 95% relative humidity? NO. It just means their is 'SOME' humidity in the air and that the glass is cooler than the air surrounding it.

Actually, one can use(and re-use) spawn bags quite well without an impulse sealer.
Think duckttape or masking tape and get creative.

Q: Help! Some of my cakes get really really stuck in their PF jars, and no matter how much I bang them, the only way I can get them out is by actually tugging them out.... which sometimes pulls the cakes apart. Some are even so bad I can only get them out by cutting the cake in half... they still fruit but not as much as the intact cakes. What do I do!??!!

I didn't see this one on here, perhaps Magash or someone can answer this age old question?

Q: If a jar has a contam in it, should I just throw the ENTIRE jar away and buy a new one, or is there a way to empty it, and 100% sterilize it for re-use?

If you have alot of money and don't mind throwing jars away...go for it.

If you don't...use my method.

Take the jars outside..so that your not opening a contaminated jar inside your place.
Opening a contaminated jar indoors can cause alot of contam problems.

Outdoors...
Get a garbage can or bag and scoop the substrate into the garbage without breathing any of it in...
try and keep the jar in towards the bottom of the garbage can or bag if you can.
Then take the nasty jar and put it into a bucket or large container with bleachy water...and let it soak for a couple days.

After soaking for a few days...
Clean the inside of the jar out with a bottle brush.
Then wash the jar or jars out with fresh water.

Then you can take it back into the house, apt. or dwelling type unit...etc.
Put them in the dishwasher...or wash them really good by hand if you don't have a dishwasher.

Then they will be good enough to use again.

Hello all
I happen to be a newbie and in the process of pinning my first two cakes. I have a question that seems to fit with the general discussion.
When i birthed my cakes i put them directley on the perlite, the mycellium is starting to grow in the perlite but im getting a lot of pins.
Q:Will birthing cakes directley onto perlite affect them in any way

You need to get new jars. Make sure you use tapered mason jars ( jars that have a larger opening at the top, and get narrower towards the bottom). This will allow your cakes to slide out easier.

please help me!
I have bough a myco farm bag and injected with 2-3ml of cambodian cubensis culture. It has been at least 15 days and its showing no sign of mycelium. It is in an incubator i have made with a cool box and my ps2. I keeps a steady 24-28 * but once i had it at about 32* because i put the lid on too tightly. I have inh=jected with another ml today to see what will happen.
Q. What the hell could be wrong?? could 32* have killed my spores?

Yes. They are very prone to contamination.

That is why you want a good filter on one, if you allow for gas exchange.

Mold will most often grow as a blue/gray cover - on the surface.

The way to tell, is Not to agitate an LC for several days.

Contaminated LC

my filter is pretty much one small hole in the lid the diameter of a syringe. so far im seeing no contams after about 5 days although i've shaken it a little if that's what you mean by agitating. anyways, if it were to get contaminated would that be to complete waste or could i start an outdoor grow by making a bed outside and pouring in a few inches deep you think?

Q: As to when substrate is fully colonized, is it alright to take the PF tek styled 1/2 pint jar out of the incubator and introduce it to light before taking it out of the jar?
To initiate pinning inside the jar, and than take it out to fruit after pins are seen.

I've been rading alot of grow guides but I'm still confused on harvesting. How much dry yield can be obtained from a typical rice cake from a 1/2 pint container? I heard 1 dry gram per week after its been colonized is that true? And how many weeks can a rice cake produce for?

I found a number of errors in this FAQ post... If you feel qualified to write FAQs at least make sure your answers are correct. I do think a short FAQ with the MOST asked questions should be stickied to the top of this forum.

> Q, "does VERMICULITE, contains ASBESTOS?".
> (NO).

Not all vermiculite contains asbestos, but vermiculite mined from some locations has been found to contain it. Avoid breathing the dust.

> Q, " Does a food dehydrator cause potency loss?"
> (No. Anything under 400 ?F does not cause potency loss.)

Actually any amount of heat will increase decomposition of actives. This is a simple fact of chemistry. As a general rule the rate of reaction doubles for every 10C. If you dried at 400F I highly doubt you would have any actives left by the time they dried.

> 25.)How long will PC'ed jars keep?
> "A properly sterlized jar will remain clean for months"

A sterilized jar will keep a lot longer than "months". Probably 6 months to a year before it becomes "less than optimal".

> 30.)Can i obtain spores from dried mushrooms?
> "Not really, you're much better off buying your own"

Yes you can. Isolate on agar first, then use as you see fit.

> Q. Do black lights help cakes and casings pin?
> A. Black lights cause mutations.

Black lights do emit UV radiation, but it is long wave UV (UV-A) not short wave UV (UV-B&C). Short wave UV causes DNA damage and mutations while long wave is harmless. That's why you can look at blacklights and they can put them up in clubs and bars without risk. Black lights don't cause mutations, but they probably aren't very good for initiating pinning either.
