Does a ballast need a box?

So I'm wiring up a C24 cabinet, and I am putting in the ballast. Does it need to be in a metal box? Is this merely a safety issue? Or an aesthetic one? Does anyone know? Thanks.

It's a safety issue. Best you cover it with something unless you like the idea of accidental electrocution.

Every single ballest forsale is in a metal box. The Raw ballests you buy are meant to replace old ballest that have malfunctioned and need to be replaced. Never run a ballest without a proper metal box Or grounds. You could seriously hurt or kill yourself with that capasitor.

Thanks for the replies. I have a brass planter that will fit the three components nicely, will brass work for grounding purposes? And how much ventilation does it need? Again, I appreciate the help.

Heaps of ventilation, drill as many holes in it as you can.
heat kills ballasts.
