My first atempt is starting off a bit rocky
    #5338186 - 02/25/06 02:40 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

Well I Inoc. my first 12 1/2 pint jars on 2/22 in a home made glove box. (6 B+, 6 Burma) After witch they where placed in a large rubermaid with a heating pad underneath the container. I have a small digital thermometer with a remote probe that was also placed in the IC. Problem was the probe was dangling down the side of chamber and not in the center. I was reading constant temps around 80F and figured that was about right. Anyway, I opened op the IC on 2/24 and placed the probe directly above the pad and it started to sky-rocket. I immediately turned the pad off and let it cool. Even with the pad removed, temps climbed to 103.3 before they started to drop. (I had the pad on high, following the thermometer)

The problems been corrected by duct tapping the pad to the roof of the IC, and now I'm getting temps right where I want them. (around 82F) Also I know that the problem didn't affect all the cakes because I've got at least one thats taking off. (was closer to the edge of the chamber.) Question is, are the cakes that where directly above the pad most likely dead? Should I remove them, or see what happens?

wait and see. why not just cut out the heating pad. its so much eaasyer then dealing with makeshift incubation chambers with uneven heat and what not. if you arn't going to make a decent one just let everything colonize at room temp. its not that much slower and no headack.

Nothing to gain by tossing them. Nothing to lose by waiting to see.

I don't even want to look at aquarium heaters. I bought like 3 when I was trying to get my setup going, and for some odd resone I couldn't really get them to heat worth spit.

You should certaintly keep them going for a while to see. I'd bet they're ok. I've been told thermal death for spores is 122 (many may not have germinated yet), and thermal death for mycelium is 106. Plus, while the bottom of the jars may have been close to your readings, the substrate higher up was probably cooler. I've measured a 7 degree diffrence between the top and bottom of the substrate when I used a heating pad.

Did you test the temps? I made a TiT heater using an aquarium heater and left it on high for well over 24 hours. Then I tested the water and it felt damn right chilly to me. I wated another 24 hours and got the same thing and was ready to write the whole thing off. Finally stuck a thermometer in the top tub and left it for a few hours and when I checked it the temp was 83F but the water still felt cool to me. Didn't realise I was such a bad judge of water temp

Course now I just put my colosizing jars on top of the Water heater where is's a constant, perfect 85F

Yep, checked with a digital thermometer in the top tub. Unfortunetly I  threw them out like a day befor I discovered the "heat bomb" instructions. That I might have tryed.
