If so, what languages do you speak? Currently I only speak english, but I'm attending my state university in the fall, and am going to minor in a foreign language.
I can't decide, though, I could choose German, French, Spanish or Russian as a minor, but there are several other classes (hebrew, korean, japanese, chinese), too.
As an english speaker do you think german would be fairly easy to pick up? I've (pretty much) narrowed it down to german or french. For just a couple thousand bucks extra I could study abroad in any EU country, though!
Regular tuition is about 6 thousand for about 15 credit hours, not including room and board, including that it's about double, but if I studied abroad in france or germany or the netherlands it's still only about eight thousand. It's worth it, imo, just to be in a diff. culture (not to mention close proximity to the coffee shops in amsterdam )
Are any of you guys college students or going this fall? What's your major/minor? Share! I'm hoping to go for a double major in physics/chemistry, if not just one or the other
Peace all and have a good day

The way I see it is I have no excuse NOT to learn another language.

I'm a second year German student, and I really like it. I think it's one of the easier languages for an English speaker to pick up.
I'm not proficient in it, though. I can read most things and understand the jist of it, and I can comprehend and memorize enough to pass the classes. But if I were to converse with an actual German, they'd think I was retarded.
It's fun, though. However, French might be a good choice too. It's a really beautiful language, and probably no more difficult than German.

I went to french immersion up until high school, so all of my elementary school education was in french.
When you learn a language from an earlier age, you pick it up much more easily. Remember, you can take the class, but unless you put yourself in a situation where you can really practice the language, you won't learn it, and the closer you are to adulthood, the more practice you're going to need (if you're over the age of 18, it's going to take a good deal of dedication to learn another language).
Good luck though!

I'm definitely going to apply for the study abroad program after my freshman year. If I do choose french I can either go to Paris or Lyon, sounds like a lot of fun.
Thanks for the input, everybody

i can count to like 20 in mandarin and know a bunch of random words but its pretty hard.... the writing system seems impossible to me
but im pretty sure Mandarin is the most spoken language in the world so it would probably be good to know

My thoughts: 1) most classes emphasis more spelling and writing upfront than is necessary to communicate. If you want to rapidly get to the point where you use the language, try picking up Pimsleur's language CDs. They only work on listening and speaking, but I think they are very good. Start with one of their 4 or 5 CD sets for $20-$40. The next 30 CD set will cost a bit, but much less than school will.
2) to learn and retain how to use the language, you have to use it outside class. www.mylanguageexchange.com is a good way to meet speaking partners to practice.
3) chicks dig foreign guys. Its a universal thing.
A friend of mine grew up in Taiwan and speaks good Chinese. For awhile he taught English in China, which is a low-paying job any white person can get (even if they don't speak Chinese). Now though he is a financial reporter. He travels a lot, living in different countries for 2-3 months at a time. That sounds fucking awesome to me.
