Growing BLUE MEANIES
    #5336726 - 02/25/06 12:49 AM (17 years, 11 months ago)

My first question is what species are blue meanies? The guy who sold them to me said little, I think he said they were thin/long stemmed. Now if it could be more than one strain, what should I fruit them on (eg dung wood mix???) or what? Should I use light to initiate pinning? And any experienced input will be greatly appreciated. Muchos Gracias helpers, peace. PS looking for good spores to buy, stronger fungi seen?

you're right...

dumb question.

sorry,
but it's not hard to figure out who the MAIN spore suppliers are and what strains are out there for research and/or cultivation...

blue meanies are copelandia cyanescens, aka Pan Cyans. If you've never grown mushrooms before i suggest putting the cyan syringe down and ordering a cubensis syringe from our vendors and get your feet wet that way.

hmmm why do people always say pan cyans are for intermediates? every grow log i've seen has raved about how easy and super fast they are.
so why not suggest these to a beginner?
Im honestly clueless.

There is also a cubensis strain called Blue Meanie that is not related to the Pan species. If the description the guy told you was long, skinny stems, then they are propably Pan Cyans like Coda stated.

Correct. Blue meanies are copes. The cube strain that was renamed should be boycotted until it goes away.

Copes are a logical second grow after one masters cubes. Copes are not as fast as cubes, and generally take twice or more as long to begin pinning after exposing to fruiting conditions. For this reason alone, if you're not experienced at casing teks, yours may fall to contamination due to the extra time involved. It's also a temptation to 'do something' like scratching when pins don't form as fast as you think they should, therefore ruining the project.

Yup, its also a lot easier to learn the ropes with cubensis since the species is not as prone to contams and has stronger myc then the cyans do. Plus you can spend time experimenting with casing layes and what you need to do to change the eviornment with affecting your cube grow to much.

Long story short: its much better to crawl, walk and THEN run.
