What is Minidump?
    #5336420 - 02/24/06 10:59 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

Recentally had to format my disk and re-install windows.  Everything seemed fine, but now I see that it crashes about once a day.:badcomputer:

I get a blue screen with some "technical information" on it, and have started writing that down.

But I also get these Minixxxx.dmp files.  Are these some sort of error file to help me find which driver/component is fucking up?

Thx for any advice and help

Yeah the Minixxxx.dmp files are dumps of your physical memory at the time of the crash. They can be used to diagnose what the problem is...but I've never seen or heard of anyone using them for this.

You would have to know a whole lot about what's going on inside the system memory to make any sense of the files. It's over my head

ok, so a better bet would be to remove a device/application, run as normal and see if it crashes?  Some type of process of elemination?

Somebody somewhere mentioned it may be bad hardware.  Is there an app I can used to check if ex. Ram is bad?

Thx, I know these types of questions are annoying  :typing:

Your absolute best bet so far is to check out the info you get when the computer crashes, on the blue screen.

It will probably say something like "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" and then give you some address numbers like "0x05CFF003".

Copy down the error message and the address numbers it gives you, and do a search for those things on google. I'm almost positive you'll find out what the problem is pretty quickly.

Memtest86 is a good program for testing the RAM, it is bootable from a floppy, but be prepared, as the full test takes a while even on a fast computer....

peace

Have you patched/updated your install?

Yes, I am all updated.

I believe I have found the problem, and it is BOINC, the newest incantation of SETI@home. For the past two nights, I have turned off BOINC, and the computer has been running the whole time. Guess I have to look for aliens the old fashioned way (telescope)
