Which cactus should i choose?

Im looking to start growing a few cacti, but im torn over which species to get. I have read that the rumor of the Peruvian Torch haviing a higher mescaline content than the San Pedro is nothing but a myth, based on a single study. Also, which species grows faster, and would do better in the southeastern United States? Thanks for the input.

I suggest some pedro and bridgesii.

My experience tells me that peruvianus hits way stronger than the same amount of pachanoi/bridgesii, maybe higher mescaline concentration, maybe other alkaloids. The most easy to grow is pachanoi, clearly.

"The most easy to grow is pachanoi, clearly." Elaborate.
"My experience tells me that peruvianus hits way stronger than the same amount of pachanoi/bridgesii, maybe higher mescaline concentration, maybe other alkaloids."
I assume you're talking about dry flesh here? Otherwise, you probably happened to buy a good 'peruvianus' cutting that came from south america. Bridgesii is the one that people tend to find has the "other alkaloids".

In the place where I live the temperature typically ranges -15 ~ +45 celsius yearly. I've seen several peyote die in winter. The same occured with peruvianus, but bridgesii & pachanoi withstood. In summer, peruvianus and bridgesii are more prone to sunburns than pachanoi. Also, pachanoi is easier to handle; its spines are far less dangerous than those of peruvianus or bridgesii. In addition, I'm a bit careless, and forget to water them, checking pH and those things. This resulted in 0 pachanoi casualties, but some of other species.

Everything grown from seed but bridgesii. Bridgesii may feel different, but I find peruvianus more intense: I don't know the reason, I only explained some possibilities.

Sounds good, but keep in mind the fact that you seem to have gotten good (Macrogonus perhaps) peruvianus genetics, while the person you advise would probably wind up with a cuzcoensis.

Grow some San Pedro, with a warm climate and adequate water/fertilizer it should shoot up. Watch out that your fertilizer does not have too high of a nitrogen content, it may hurt the plant.

Trichocereus validus, I say - if only for the sake of originality. (and yes, according to alkaloid measurements, it is equipotent to pachanoi and the others). As for the others, it's a question of aesthetics, unless you live in a climate which necessitates cold-hardiness (in which case a bridgesii is in order, which I personally think is the most visually pleasing anyhow). Also, Shaman Australis are selling seeds from a cross between a bridgesii and a scopulica.

Not sure where you live. Peruvians have long thorns, Pedros don't. Consider if you have kids around or not, or animals. If they are to be outdoors. Peruvians stay as long single beams and Pedros branch out quite a bit. Get some Ariocarpus fissuratus from Old Man Cactus who collects upset Ariocarpuses from places in Texas where people come to build roads and buildings. having a cacti as old as oneself is neat. Also, I love Agaves, and you can buy Agave maguey which is the kind used and it spreads like crazy. It's not unforeseeable that in a few years one could make their own Tequila. Build a pit and wood coal roast those suckers then ferment and distill. Basically. There's a couple ideas.

Pachanoi are generally the same clone wherever you get it from.
