Regarding humidification - cool mist not so cool

Okay, this is sort of a dumb question, but I have to ask:
Background: I have been having problems lately with a (very) large fogger I've been using to humidify an entire room. Namely, it's been oversaturating my casings and causing ground faults. I shocked myself the other day , so I decided to make some changes
Sooo.... I decided to cover up all my shelves with plastic and pipe in humid air from some cool mist humidifiers to remedy the problems.
I started off with two Vicks Cool Mist humidifiers (Vicks Cool Mist Humidifier V3100). Although the packages said "Vicks Cool Mist," there were wick pads, and the output is not visible mist, just air. I thought that this was perhaps the humidifier that everyone on the board seems to like.
After my casings dried out, and I tested the humidity with a psychrometer at less than 60% [edit: I tested the output of the PVC pipes by putting the bulbs of the psych. directly in front], I am beginning to think I didn't get the real McCoy.
So, what would the other people here on Shroomery reccomend?

Hmmm... looks like I need the aptly named Vicks V420. Why the hell would they package an evaporative humidifier as a "cool-mist"? Perhaps I can run the PVC from the V3100s into some wet perlite. There will be no returning them, as I've drilled holes in the things! What do y'all think?

if you're going Vicks...
go for the V420 i can't recommend this fucker enough!
and... you're making this much more complicated than it needs to be.

Yep, I will definately be getting some V420s.
And what's so over-complicated? The humidifier I had previously would have worked, if I had a room about 10 times as large (actually it worked decently until the ambient RH started to rise outside). Then I got gipped by the false labelling on the V3100s!
But, thanks for the input. I think 420 is the way to go

Oatman: What's breaking, the 3100s or the 420s? Thanks for the warning! I don't think I'll have too much backpressure as I am splitting the output between three shelves, but it's still possible.

v420

i took all the time to modify this baby, and it broke. i had it comin out in one hose... and it wasns't that long of a hose.
but still this is the 7th vicks i have bought.
from now on i am gonna just stuff the hose in there, and masking tape the remaining open parts, so that "WHEN" it breaks, i can take it back without a frieking hole drilled in it.

Yep, I ordered 2 v420s. Until I get them, I will be running an ultrasonic to make up for the low humidity output of the v3100s.
I think the 400s and the 420s are about the same, but the newer v420 allows you to fill it without taking it apart.
Just to show you what I was using before: http://hydrofogger.com/inc/sdetail/152
OVERKILL!!! I was humidifying an entire 8'x12' room with it, and zapped myself with 120v, so I decided to change my plans a bit... It worked fine for a while, but after I stopped using the air conditioner this winter, it was just too much. Even with a humidistat, it was saturating my casings. I remedied that by turning them on their sides. The oyster mushrooms seemed to like it, though, but another species was not happy. Then I saturated an electric outlet , and was very lucky I had thick soled shoes on.
If these v420s work out, I'll probably get several more.

Look at the normal outlet size.
Then, look at the adapted size you installed.
Design is for normal size outlet.
Smaller outlets create BACK PRESSURE.
That toasts the motor bushings.
Go with more small outlets, or a much LARGER one. Motors will last A LOT LONGER.
(think what happens when you semi-obstruct a cars exhaust pipe)
OR, place unadapted coolmist INSIDE your fruiting chamber.
Then, rig or adapt any small in-line type fan - for automated FAE. ((piped into your fruiting chamber)

hey agar, since you are the master of all mushroom knowledge , how many cubic feet do you think that the vicks (420) will supply?
You got me thinking: I could leave my rig like it is with the evaporative vicks (3100) piping into the chamber for FAE and a little humidity, then put the impeller vicks (420) inside the chamber for humidity.
Is oversaturation an issue with these things? My (multiple) chambers will each be about 24 cubic feet or so.

Well, thanks HippieChick. I believe that I saw your technique while I was searching the forums, on an old post about your greenhouse. I pretty much copied that, except I was dumb and used evaporative humidifiers.
I'm sure I can get the vicks coolmists (the 420s) working -- its just a shame that I spent $x$ (that's $ squared) on that industrial fogger and it doesn't fulfill my needs at all.
What's the deal with hyphae's Homer2? It sounds like thats kinda like my hydrofogger... but I'm scared to experiment anymore with it after the shock I got.
I apologize if I'm getting long-winded with this thread.

you should notice HipieChick's handy-work it IS amazong, but un-necessary w/ the V420
all you need is a roll of hi-quality duct tape i use a rubber drain stopper (cut to size) as an extra gasket
if you take the outlet grill off you are left with an oversized outlet.
run your 3/4" (inner diameter) 1"(OUTER DIAMETER) clear vinyl hosing right INTO the outlet. seal obsessively w/ duct tape or whatever kind of air-tight seal you can come up with.
if you have a Sunbeam, you HAVE to cut into it (modify the body) with the Vicks (Kaz) V420 this is totally un-necessary.

Yo, Sis..
I got tired of adapting, tuning, filling & replacing coolmists.
Found a small fan that was suitable to adapt to larger bore PVC.
 (110 V 8X6X7 inches in size)
 fogger
 (makes fog like this)
Rigged a plastic 5 gallon bucket with a fogger wired into it.
With large bore pvc pipe attached to the snap on lid.
Piped large bore pvc into fruiting chamber, from fan.
Placed a "T" pvc fitting in pvc pipe from fan to fruiting chamber.
Run pvc from bucket into the "T" fitting.
There are about 10,000 types of small near silent fans than can be adapted this same way.
Fan is on 1 timer. Fogger is on separate timer.
Unit will lightly fog about 100 square feet of FC, quickly.
Along with all the FAE, you could ever want.
Also drilled a 1 inch hole in bucket lid & placed a stopper in it. Can refill bucket of water with funnel, in a minute or 2.

If you are using a growing room and not a small chamber, then why even use hoses and make modifications? I would just drop those suckers on the floor and turn them on.

True.
In a grow ROOM, big bucket of water, with a fogger in it & an oscillating fan, would do the trick.
(agar is whacked, at the moment , so tomorrow, he might think differently)

Well, FooManShroom & agar, I did just that, with an industrial fogger (impeller type, see link on previous page), etc. Then I shocked my ass because of the film of water that was on the (outdoor style) electric outlets! Thats why I am switching to smaller humidifiers piped into subdivided growing chambers!
I also tried it out with an ultrasonic, and I had a heavy-duty humidistat that goes up to 100% to control everything. The problem was oversaturation of everything in the room.
My new idea is: if everything is on the racks of shelves I already have, but the racks are covered with plastic and humidity is piped in, then I am not humidifying the ENTIRE room and I wont get that film of water on everything. I'll only be humidifying what I need humidified.
FAE in my room is covered by a Venmar THH 1.0 HRV!
I might be able to modify my hydrofogger to split off between my racks of shelves, as I have a bunch of 6" T-splitters and some 6" ducting, but I'm afraid that even with plenty of 90 degree angles, I'll still get a super-heavy mist that will oversaturate. Sooo.... that's why I am going to modify these smaller "pussy" humidifiers.
This is a large scale project. I've had plenty of success with perlite in the past, and some success (several gallons of mushrooms) with the foggers. I just want to make it super-professional, as I am attempting to start a small business in gourmet mushroom growing, (and I like other species, too ). And I hate getting shocked with AC. It sucks.

Yeah trich sucks, as does cobweb. My biggest problems with my experiences in over-saturation were bacterial contamination, where the mushrooms just rot... yuk.
Imagine having the most perfect pinsets ever and then having them get about 1 inch and stop.... arrrrgh!
Anyway, I think you all have helped me about as much as you can, the rest is up to me! Thanks to everyone, hippiechick, agar, hyphae, etc.

Heres some Homer2 pics in action as promised! BTW the outlets are suppose to be opening up this prevents any possible dripping although it has worked fine the way it was setup so I've heard.

Very nice! The mist particle size looks about like my industrial foggers' particle size -- maybe a bit smaller. This makes me think that I could, perhaps, get it to work for me! Maybe I can tinker with the impeller fan to reduce the output or something.
What do you do for humidity control?
Is it: 1) controlled via potentiometer (fan speed) or 2) humidistat controlled
Many thanks again hyphae, and your rig looks great. (yours does too, hippiechick)
Bah! I lost half of the new stuff I moved into my FC because of the dry air from those damn evaporative humidifiers, and I have trich invasion in my colonizing chamber! Its freakin' February! Oh, well. I still have two 66 qt. tubs and 14 jars of fully colonized grain, bales and bales of straw and about 150 lb of cow shit, and the v420 coolmists are on their way, so I should be back in production in a couple of weeks.
PF, small casings, and perlite was so much easier!
Once I get everything set up the way I REALLY want it to be, I should post a pictorial or something.
-------------------- Howdy, boys! Let's get down to business. I got my colt and my schofield, and they's jist itchin to be broken in.

I used a closet once setup a nice little lab trouble was all the shit that was in there ended up in the bedroom that pissed off the GF then I ended up dumping her as she was getting in the way of my sterile culture technique! I have found out that if you put the fan and fogger on different timers and let the fan start 5mins before the fogger is turned on it works best. Then let them finish on the same time.
With the action pics: with the buckets on the side it was not possible to make a good return flow of condensed moist so it had to come out of the tube, with a piece of wool thread you can direct the water away from the casings.

i also added a heater that uses warm water(maybe even from the computer soon)
