Big Rotten Gyms...?

These are rather abundant around my house and in the forests here. Growing on decaying wood, they have a typical mushroom odor, but it isn't at all dispeasing. No jack'o'lantern glow, but I have some doubts as to the veracity of that claim, at least in an objective sense. The larger of these caps is about 3in. I have spotted them up to around 6in... They leave an orange spore print.

They are a lot more concave and have more decurrent gills than the gyms I've seen (which isn't many), but color wise, spore wise and that brownish bruising are all gym like.
A lot of people dispute that jack-o-lantern's glow thing, it's much better to do a spore print. I've heard jack-o-lantern poisoning is horrendously painful.
I'll be interested to hear what the experts have to say about your finds. Oh, and did you take a little taste? Gyms are terribly bitter while I hear jacks are tastier.

If those are jack-o-lanterns, they will drop white spores. The decurrent gills and lack of annular zone rules out Gymnopilus.

I'm not about to bite into these; they are too rotten. I'm going to go out and see if I can find some more right now...Perhaps a more healthy specimen.

The appearance is old, nasty Oyster Mushrooms, in which case they would actually produce a white to pale lilac spore print.
Did you actually make a spore print, or is your spore print color based on the color of the gills? There are a number of mushrooms whose gill color will fool the unwary.
Happy mushrooming!

well, the first print I took appeared to be orange. And so does the second... Hmm. The problem is, they are a bit rotten so who knows how much material may just be sloughing off. Here are some more specimens...

Hmmm... Actually these may be a different species. Very similar in appearance and smell, although much bigger. The larger cap is about 6 inches in diameter. These ones produced a surefire orange spore print. And, eh, they are more decayed, as you can see...

DAMMIT I HATE MYSELF!! I just realized that if those are more than likely gyms then I have already found those a while back and threw them away!

If the spore prints are orange they are gyms but there are so many gymnopilus species that it would be hard to ID them to be active or not without any bruising.

The ones in your first post are certainly not Gymnopilus.
The second ones you posted most likely are Gymnopilus spectabilis. However, they are far too rotten to consider consuming, even as tea. In my experience, Gymnopilus spectabilis loses almost all of its potency by the time the margin flattens out.
Don't hate yourself man.
Remember where you found them and check that spot often. You want to pick them before or right as the veil is breaking. Don't forget to post your finds to verify ID even if you are sure they are Gyms.
Good luck man.

The ones in the first and second photos are not the same. The ones in the second photos do look like Gymnopilus.

Thanks. I believe the stump where I found the latter gyms will prove to be a factory after this latest series of showers abates. Upon closer inspection of newer samples I hope to find clear evidence that they are in fact gymnopilus spectabilis. But I suppose only time will tell...
