Using ATX power supply outside a computer
    #5334786 - 02/24/06 12:30 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

I have a spare PSU sitting around here, which I'd like to use for testing fans and such without going to the trouble of putting them in a machine. Is there a way to simulate the PC's power button to turn the thing on? I assume you'd connect two of the pins on the 20-pin plug, but does anyone know which two?

Why can't you just test them with your existing power supply?

Connect the green wire to any of the black wires. That should force the supply to turn on and stay on as long as the green/black wires are connected.

If you want to use it for anything more than testing fans, you'll need to supply some kind of load on the main +5v rail or the supply won't regulate the voltage correctly. Use something like a 2 ohm, 10 watt resistor.

I bet if you tried looking at the technical documents for the PSU from whatever company manufactures it, that you would be able to find which pins to connect. Or, you can try looking at a mobo and seeing if there is any printing that may suggest which pins are related to the power switch.

I can't seem to find it now, but there are 5.25" bay mount things that give you 4-pin power jacks on the outside of your case. I'm sure someone here will know what I'm talking about.

I've seen something like that that was made for a PCI slot. It's not worth the trouble of buying and installing it though, I just wanted a quick and dirty way to power some fans up without opening the comp, and I got that.
