Encouraging Gymnopilus Growth

I've heard that if you stick a piece of bread on a cedar stump with a damp paper towel you will most likely get gyms. Is this true?

Sorry that bread scheme unfortunately won?t work. It would be awesome in a bizarre kinda way if it were true. Honest wizardry can however be accomplished through employment of knowledge accumulated through mindful research. I have never even considered a Gymnopilus growing endeavor but would imagine you could colonize dowels for transfer to logs? similar to shitake or oyster mushrooms. If you were going to go to that trouble might I suggest another species? unless you are particularly enamored with Gymnopilus for some reason. Perhaps you should pay a visit to the cultivation forum. georgem

I heard it from my 'dude' that gets me 'stuff'. And in a way it kind of makes sense, I mean bread grows moldy and if it's on a stump it could encourage something to grow on there. And George there's no need for sarcasm. You see right there I would've been busted for flaming if I even said anything remotely that close. Meh, oh well.

I wasn?t trying to be sarcastic at all? sincerely just being playful. You have a wizard avatar so I was exploiting the old world magic angle. I did offer honest advice about checking the cultivation forum. I?m sorry if you felt my joke about incantations was belittling! I don?t want to be a silly jerk so I?ll delete it. Georgem

Something can happen but i doubt it could be mushrooms, much less gyms ... Gyms are not a domesticated specie, they grow in the wild and are subjected to a very specific life cycle. Bread does not take any part in this equation, multiple environmental factors do. Believe me, i do have a gym factory in my backyard forest when the right conditions are met.

georgeM has a dry wit that can be confused for sarcasm, but he is always friendly, helpful and insightful, rarely inciteful.
It might seem to make some amount of sense given that bread gets moldy, mold=fungus etc. But there are probably hundreds of thousands to millions of species of fungi, and they all have their own ecologic niche that they inhabit. Gyms niche seems to be dead wood, so it is unlikely that they would also be able to grow on something like bread. It is probably just as likely that the mold that would grown on the bread would also grow on wood, maybe outcompeting gyms, or even parasitizing them.
I think georgeMs idea about transplanting gyms ala oysters is a good idea, but it would take some experimenting to see if it would really work.
The best advice is to understand the mushroom and its habitat such that you have better success when you hunt.
Good luck

Well I appreciate all your help. And don't worry about it George I thought it was being snidely but it was just joking so I understand. I didn't think about the wizard thing but anywho I'm going to give it a try to see what pops up on the stump I put the bread on. I know the chances of getting actives are slim but meh.

I traded about 20 Gym. Spec. Prints and sent them all over the world in the last 5 months.. I have tried a number of times and have been finding it way way challenging to get a grow on.. I have a couple of the folks I have traded with that have some Mycelium growing and it seems hopeful..
As for a slice of bread on a Cedar stump.. Man I sure wish it was that easy... Hell id be the guy in the woods with loafs of bread under my arms!

Gymnopilus luteofolius is a good candidate for cultivation
and that story about the bread is a no-no

no fungus will grow on cedar, I have about 600 of them in my yard all in various stages of life some of these include dead trees/limbs used as fence posts for the last 20 years, to date I've never seen a lichen or fungus growing on them

What specific cedar tree do you have? Never seen any "cedar apples" on them?

I've never seen these in the wild..
Quite the strange looking species though! I wouldn't mind finding some of those to add to my photo collection.

I recently found a small stalked puffball of some sort growing from the trunk of a mature cedar. Too old to identify.
