Go Look at the Moon!!!

Go outside and look at the moon right now. There is a huge ring around it. The diameter of this ring is like 8-10 times the size of the moon. Its crazy, i've never seen anything like this. I'm in missouri, so I'm not sure how many of you will be able to see this, I don't know how local of a phenomenom this is??? Anyone know ?? What causes this??? I looked it up on the internet for a while and didn't find anything. I wish i had a camera

Wow! I am in Flagstaff Arizona, and this is the second night that I have seen this. It is absolutley unlike anything I have ever seen before! I wrote to the folks at ZETA TALK last night to inquire about it, but I have no response thusfar. Anyone else seeing this? Wierd............(twilight zone music)

Does it look like a faded, sompletely circular rainbow? In that case there's just a cloud or mist in front of it and the light gets bent in the droplets. Nothing mystical about it I'm afraid.

This is called a lunar halo and is generally a localized phenomena. It is a prismatic effect of light reflected off of Cirro-stratus clouds. These are thin clouds, very high in the atmosphere, and are composed of ice crystals. They bend light at a 22 degree angle, which creates a solar halo or lunar halo. Sometimes there are multiple halos. Try not to attach any significance to it other than it's ethereal beauty.
