We were stoned as shit one night at my friend's place. He lives on the third floor, and one of us was stoned AND drunk (Alcohol makes you stupid).
So one moment he was on the balcony eating french fri... Sorry, eating freedom fries, I go and grab the bong in the bedroom, I come back and the drunk dude is not there anymore. I'm like "What the fuck..?" I checked the kitchen, the bathroom and the bedroom he was nowhere to be found.
Then it struck me. I go on the balcony (My friend lives on the third floor, it's quite high, but there's grass right below so the fall is less worse than if it was concrete or something), I look down and I see our drunk friend flat on his back.
All he could find to say at that moment was: "Dude.. I dropped the fries..."

Sedcond year in college.. in the dorms.. i was at the end of the hallway... the hallway made a couple of weird L shaped turns so you couldnt see one end to the other.
One night I was up till 3am on the shroomery... something happened at 3:30am
I woke up in the morning and walked out of my room to say hi to the people loitering on my floor. They had this weird looks on their faces. I asked jokingly "who died?". They looked at me like "uhh".
I walked around the L shap corner and saw blood splattered allLLlLLL over the walls.
One dude on the floor went berzerk (he was on antidepressants.. lots.. and was drinking.. used to have a pcp problem)... and start running aroun d my floor trying to stab everyone. He started off with a buddy in his room watching ALIENS and started asking his friend is he believed in God. He stabbed one guy in the neck that he was drinking with. People were running around screaming right after I went to bed and the dude was pounding on everyone's doors trying to find an open door so he could stab someone else and I didn't even hear it. Thank god one of the guys on the floor was an EMT in training.
The guy that was stabbed in the neck lived and has forgiven the dude. The guy has no recolection... he just went nuts. I dont think he pressed charges or anything. Kind of hard when the guy just blacked out.. not like he did it on purpoe or anything. The nut job had the same name as me and lived on my floor so everyone on campus thought it was me for days.
That wasn't the only time at my school that someone flipped out on drugs and tried to kill someone.
Also when I moved to the on campus apts... well the year i moved off actually.. someone living in my old apt blew his brains out....
Then there was the time I had to try to occupy this nutjob that was drunk and going crazy loosing his shit in my living room while the people in the apt downstairs called the cops because he scared the living shit out of everyone. When the cops arrived he tried to punch one of them and I had a front row seat to the cops beating the living shit out of him in my own living room.
Thats what I get for going to a college inside Baltimore City city limts.

15 feet is pretty high and a very dangerous height to fall from. Maybe people who KNOWINGLY JUMP off from a 15 foot elevation to the ground will most likely not die from it, but if you fall from that height unexpectedly, there might be 99.9% chance you will hurt yourself. The fall may not result in a death, but in some way cause injury if you are unexpected of the 15 ft. sudden drop. Don't take my word for it, go try and fall from a 15 ft. height and see if you are peachy and perky after "just" a 15 ft. fall.....

Maybe not, in the long run, but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant." Hunter S. Thompson.

15 feet is pretty rough. If Atkins can die falling down 2 steps... a normal human could easily die from 15 feet in the wrong position.

you're school should provide some sort of counselling service if someone was really hurt/died and this is really affecting you...
but, if you don't want to look into that...
I was present when a person that i was just building a friendship with was hit by a car and killed. I didn't actually see him get hit, but saw him about 5 min later after just being covered with a sheet. It is, to date, one of the most intense events i've ever had to deal with... and up until the time i moved almost 3 years later, I would always have a terrible feeling whenever I went by that spot.
I personally don't think you can really avoid dwelling on death, especially when it's been put really close in front of you. But, I don't think your mental view of death has to be entirely negative. This is a time when the idea of the finality of death will be especially pervasive in your life... and will probably help you come to terms with the fact that life ends at the most random times.
My personal coping method (when i finally stopped drinking and doing lots of drugs for a few weeks) was to start thinking about why the thought of death upset me so much. Up until that point I had never really given death a lot of actual thought... I knew it happened, I knew it couldn't be avoided, but I had some view of death as being a controlled experience. Like it was only my actions that could lead to my death.. that randomness somehow didn't factor in. So, I as actually very surprised when this person's death shook me so much.
I listened to a lot of people's personal beliefs about the dying process... about "what happens next?"... about how such a terrible thing can happen to someone so young... and about how death is really completely uncontrollable.
I reached a point where the thoughts i had about death and traumatic events in general don't really bother me anymore.. they just provide fuel for new insight into my own personal life/death and the chaos that is the world around us. I decided that if I ran around fearing death that I was basically supressing part of life. There's no reason to fear death as it is just the end of something.. and the end of one thing means the beginning of the next...
I don't know if this is any help to you..

yeah.. it happens.. but dealing with the thought of it can be difficult for people.
i've seen one over-dose death while tripping at a party, but it didn't really bother me because the kid had taken enough drugs to get himself to the point of dying... it was sad, but didn't really make me fear death at all.
drinking more will either numb you up or make you even more depressed about it.. but worth the shot, i suppose.

You get used to it and accept it after you see it a few times. I've seen a lot of dying/dead people, it's part of my job. That didn't make it any easier for me to see the first few times. In fact the first one I saw die was a friggin mess that came in from an oil rig accident. The guy was hopped up on meth, had been working for 15+ hours, got sloppy, and got his arm caught in some sort of pipe vice they use to move the drilling rods.... ripped most of it off and crushed the rest. There wasn't much to do for him once he got to the ER, he'd lost lots of blood (all over the inside of the ambulance... it was scary to look in there) and was having heart arrhythmia's from the potassium released in to his blood stream from the crushed tissue. Died right in front of me a few minutes later. I had to leave the floor. I spent 20 minutes throwing up in the bathroom after that. I had nightmares about it for several nights. Eventually, you come to terms with the fact that death can hit anyone anytime. I think the ones that bother me the most were the kids who OD and get hit in car wrecks... it's really hard to deal with a young person facing death. Even those in college still get to me just because they haven't even really made it a quarter of the way through an average persons lifespan... so much left undone.
What I do know from seeing death is that the human mind at the point of death does not let you feel pain... people become almost euphoric a few minutes before it happens. That's actually something we look for to try and catch them before it happens.
It's not always a pleasant subject, but everyone must come to terms with their own mortality sometime.... and nothing forces you to look at it more than seeing someone else die. Consider it a growing experience. Look in to your own beliefs and think about what you think death really is.... is it the end or another beginning? Personally, I believe we are not this body, there is something else. I believe in the Buddhist views of the cycle of life and death, as in my mind they conform to the laws of nature and the universe more so than any kind of Heaven/Hell theory.
The way i found to let death go is just to believe that a mans deeds will carry him to his next fate.... no end no beginning

So one of the guys died. The other one is in critical condition last I heard. The guy who died just turned 20 a couple of weeks ago, he looks younger in pictures. The concrete onto which he fell was the ramp leading to the only laundramat on this part of campus. I don't think they've been able to clean off the blood stain. That's just weird.. Everytime you have to do your laundry, you can't help but think about it.
A dude a couple of posts up said calm down or something. I am pretty calm. I haven't flipped out at all, this has just been shocking. I don't like thinking about it because I keep like.. flashing to that event, what it must have been like. It seems like a really bad way to go, especially because both of them were sober. I'm sure they were familiar with that side of the building. They had to know they were falling 4 stories to concrete below. That the concrete had metal railing on either side. They had to know that they, being as young as they are/were, that they were probably going to die. That bothers me for some reason, more than someone ODing would bother me. I think it's because of the sheer violence. I mean there is a lot of blood. I don't know. I'm straight though, I didn't even know these guys. I've just seen them around.
Thanks for the advice, those of you who have offered it up.

Like hella said, death can be quite messy. 5 liters of blood can make a big splat stain.
I understand where you're at, my friend. You'll think about it pretty regularly until you find you own answer. What ultimately drives people to do these things? You can theorize all you want, but the only person who truely knows is usually dead.
It's always a bit of a shock to be around someone who dies. Everyone feels it. It can't be helped. It's a good time to evaluate your own beliefs about death when it's recent and close... over time, I think being exposed to it has made me a lot less scared of death.

having flashes of what the death was like is natural... youll get over it... one of my good friends died about a month ago from a 12 gauge shotgun put in his mouth... it was a complete accident, he was showing his friends it wasnt loaded and stupidly put it in his mouth and shot it... hows that for mental image... you dont have it as bad as you think... just stay sober the next couple weeks and you will get over it a lot quicker...
