Bolete (?) found on decaying buckeye...

Heh. Just an interesting find from the other day. I can't find anything close to this in anything I've seen in the guide or online... I wonder what it is? I really dig the color and patterning on the cap. Kind of like an explosion.

looks like this could be what you are looking at. One way to tell is how perishable it is. Boletes are very perishable, polypores are very resilient.

^^Good call.
Cut it in half the long way. Take notice of features like bruising (color and how long it takes). Also, the pores on boletes detach from the cap easily.
That is a beautiful mushroom

Thankyou for the advice! I think it may indeed be a polypore, as its texture is quite resilient. I must say, however, that it was not at all tough or leathery. I could not help but sample the taste, which I found to be rather pleasing, and perhaps a bit spicy. Sadly, it was infested thoroughly with fly larvae, and had to be discarded.

Polyporus squamosus is edible, but it tastes like watermelon rind. They are palatable when young, but certainly not what most would consider choice.
