optimizing available o2 in FC
    #5333756 - 02/24/06 12:06 AM (17 years, 11 months ago)

another concept i wanted to bounce off the shroomery collective.

now, it seems relativly common for people to suspend their casings (or whathaveyou) above their perlite/h2o in order to maximize surface area, evaporation, etc.

expanding on this, why not raise your casings as high as possible (with respect to fruiting headroom, of course). after all, CO2 is heavier than O2, and will settle to the bottom. keeping the casing well above this stagnant layer of CO2, and in the upper 'lighter' layer of O2, would increase the casings exposure to O2 between fannings.

not earth shattering, but hey... this of course is aimed at perlite based fruiting chambers with sufficient headroom. it seems like you can never fan enough as it is, and this is a little 'insurance'.

just curious what ya'll think.

I already apply this to my FC since raising your casings up off of the perlite layer increases perlite surface area, increasing RH. I agree that it does help to keep the casings out of the stagnant air, especially at night when I cannot fan as often as I'd like. All of my casings have a lip around the top, meaning that I never fill my casing containers all the way up. This means that CO2 collects in the casing no matter how high the casings are. When fruiting, this practice is more beneficial, since the fruits will extend beyond the "rim" of my casing into the fresh air above. Anyways, yes I think it helps, but nothing replaces constant fanning or a good coolmist.
