Where can a guy get Agar besides the various internet sources? Is it used for anything else except Mushroom cultivation?

Make your own agar, there are plenty recipes for potatoe dextrose agar..
that is what i use. just incase you dont know how to search the internet (GRIN) i'll tell you how...

boil 4 or 5 goold size potatoes chopped up quite fine, in no more than 1L of water (by the time its done boiling)...
after about 1/2 an hour, strain off the water (KEEP THIS) and throw away the potatoes.
add 15g of agar agar (health food store)
hrm.. 10 grams of dextrose powder
and 2 grams of yeast.
add this until the mixture is good and consistant..
then pour it in an autoclavable container, and p/c it for 45mins, then pour it out into pitre dishes, or something else similar.. like 1/2 widemouth jars

I've seen this on various sites but thanks anyway. I was more concerned at where to get the "Agar Agar". You said in health food stores but what section in the store would you look? Thanks again for your help.

WE got some at a health food store, where we get the whole grain rye kernels, but it was about 4 times expensive as the stuff we got from a bulk food store
got like 40g for $4 canadian.

you only need to PC agar for 15 @ 15psi.

Actually, it depends on the endospore load of the Agar how long you have to sterilize it. You don't want to go much over 15 psi (121C) or the sugars will carmalize. When my friend mixes up her own, she autoclaves it at 121C for at least 45 minutes, usually an hour. If she uses a lab grade product, which has already been sterilized, she only holds it at temperature for 15 to 30 minutes.
