help with bacillus (wet spot) please!
    #5332835 - 02/23/06 07:50 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

Recently, I've been having to toss away alot of PF tech jars because I'm losing 20% to bacillus (wet spot). With grain, a 24 hour soak then a 1 hour pressure cook does the trick. How can this be applied to BRF cakes?

Also, is this bacteria harmful? I felt pretty sick after getting just a small whiff of one of those jars

heres all i could find on the genus bacillus
http://textbookofbacteriology.net/Bacillus.html

bacillus cereus causes food poisioning
bacillus anthracis causes a nastier form of poisoning

some are really bad
some are required for you to be able to survive(in your intestines)

if you knew what particular species you have i could answer whether or not it is harmful. if i had to guess i would say Bacillus cereus
some strains are so weak that we can work with them very safely in the lab and some are bad enough to give you the shits/pukes. and some will kill you with in hours/days of exposure depending on whether you inhailed it or just came into epedermic contact.

Thanks man!

Having slept on the problem, I'm thinking it has something to do with the broken seal on my pressure cooker.

If you spot something that might resemble bacteria, please don't sniff it. Some kind of aerobic bacteria can make you sick if they manage to infect your lungs.

Best way to avoid contamination in such conditions, is repairing your PC or buying a new one. PCing longer might help you in this case, but i advice you to replace the PC anyway.

Hmm. In several jars my good ol P. Cubensis seem to have colonized over the wet spot. Would it be safe to eat the fruits?

that type of call will be up to you. I would strongly suggest that you not eat anything that has knowingly came into contact with a large bacteria/mold colony. Its better to make an error on the side of safety than make an error that lands you in the emergency room or eat something that really can harm your kindeys/liver.

Others might well tell your its safe to eat it go ahead, but honestly there is no safe way they can say that without a complete lab identification of it, and even then its not worth the time/money that would cost.

It would be best to avoid eating any fruits from a contaminated substrate, as toxins can move via the mycelial network to uninfected areas!

Try sterilizing for longer. Make sure you are doing 15+ psi.

If you inoculate with liquid culture instead of spores, you can mix some hydrogen peroxide in with the LC. This will help to kill bacterial invasions.
