Pholiota nameko

I've ordered some nameko spawn in the form of a "toilet roll kit", ie you fill the middle of a wet toilet roll with spawn and once the roll is colonised it fruits straight off the paper. This seems like a bit of an inefficient way to use spawn, so I'm thinking of trying a larger scale effort. From the fact that it'll grow on paper I assume it's a wood lover in nature, but was wondering, as is the case with oysters, if it'll fruit just as happily off straw?
Hope so, cos I've got plenty of straw but no sawdust

Hey,
I would think that straw is not the substrate to the nameko that it is oysters. Sawdust/chip substrate will probably be best. This is not to say that they will not fruit on sawdust but it woun't fruit as well oysters. I think. Divide your spawn, try some straw and try to find some sawdust. Tell us how it works. -OR- Maybe you could increase your spawn on sterilized crushed corn cob (get from pet store), then you could inoculate alot more toilet paper rolls. Good luck.

Getting sawdust isn't a problem, but I think the only kind available around here is softwood sawdust, which might be a problem. Or it might not?

Yeah, hardwood is what you need. It took me awhile to find some too, but I finally did and picked up a load on the weekend. I am going to try shitakes soon.....

I'm sure there are trees around you...why not try innoculating some logs? Oak, Alder-basically, if psilocybes grow on it, then P. nameko will also. I would imagine that chopped straw with a little bit of bran would suffice for spawn, and if you cut discs of wood and stack them up with spawn wedged between them, you can get pretty decent yields. I would also recommend drilling 1/2 cm holes into the logs where the spawn is placed to give the mycelium a head start into the wood.
If you plan on growing logs, DO NOT OVERWATER THEM! This will allow competitors to take over...

"This is one of the few gourmet mushrooms that will give rise to substantial fruitings on a conifer wood" Stamets, GGMM
There is not a word about growing this species on straw.

Thanks for that quote zeronio, I'll try half on softwood and half on hard. I'm going to boil the softwood sawdust in lots of water to try and soak out as much of the sap as possible before sterilising.
Updates as and when.......

I'm about to try growing shitake and lions mane on 6" diameter 3 foot long oak logs. You said not to overwater them, so how much should they be watered and how often after the initial soaking and plugging. I'm also going to us a few of the leftover plugs to try to start some jars of rye seed, and hopefully if that works I'll have lots of spawn to try inoculating straw-manure and sawdust bulk substrates to see which will fruit. If it does work it should be a whole lot faster than the logs. If so I'll make lots of prints now that I know people are interested.

/sigh
well, I was about to start my nameko project today when I found out that the grain spawn, which I was storing in the fridge, had been shoved to the back, up against the cooling element by some ignorant F**K, and was frozen solid.
Is there any chance of it having survived the freezing and subsequent thawing, or should I start sharpening my axe?

If the culture libraries store their cultures in liquid nitrogen, then I guess it could have survived...
P.S. Unsharped axe = more pain!

Yay, it looks like the spawn survived. Has anyone got a needle and thread?
Actually on further inspection the toilet roll idea is actually quite neat. Each roll holds about a litre of water, and they can be stacked into "logs" as high as you want. I think I'll try that once I've multiplied my spawn by g->g transfer.

the mycelium has almost colonised the toilet paper, but 4litres of wood shavings that I spawned with a pint of rye spawn is colonising very slowly, if at all.
Bums.
Straw next I think....

I noticed that the very top layer of sawdust, and a small area around the drainage hole of the container I was spawning the sawdust in were decently colonised, so I'm guessing the slow colonisation was due to lack of air exchange.
I've poured it out into a large plastic trough, in order to increase the surface area for air exchange, and I've got to say, this stuff STINKS. Like puke and overripe blue cheese.
Mmmmmm
I don't think this is due to any contams, as the mycelium on the toilet roll smells the same when bruised.
What must the mushrooms taste like?

well, seeing as blue/bleu cheese smells like puke anyway, and I like blue chees, that isn't necessarily a bad thing, although it might put off other people.
