Outdoor flower pot shrooms - UPDATE: Indoor surprise
    #5330917 - 02/23/06 09:04 AM (17 years, 11 months ago)

I had a couple of casings contaminate so I put all the mycelium in to flower pots, threw on some peat as a casing layer and chucked em on the balcony. Its been very hot here (35 degress C on average) and very low humidity so keeping them moist has been a bitch - it also blows a gail here so all that combined makes things dry out VERY quckly. I still got a few popping up though -

Today I was moving one of the pots and I found this -

Thanks, i remember going away on vacation last summer after just harvesting a small BRF casing.  I said fuck it, might as well let em grow while im gone.  So i put the casing back in my fc, left the lids cracked at the corners, stuck the FC underneath a ceiling fan, and when i came back i had a nice flush that had just reached maturity.  The casing was all dried out, but it produced a great flush with no work at all

Those are really hardy looking. Almost look like the texture is rougher... but that's probably just because of that drying breeze and the cracked appearance of the caps. Do they feel any more meaty than normal? I wonder if the semiharsh conditions will effect alkaloid content at all. Either way, that's pretty cool to see. Thanks for showin us.

Dude, just say "I've been trying to grow some pretty flowers, but all I can seem to grow is this damn fungus!" lol.. that's so brilliant it'd have to work. Oh! or better yet, go get some realistic fake flowers, and like put it right in the middle of the pot. Then if anyone asks, claim that the flower and the mushrooms have a mutually beneficial relationship.

They feel VERY meaty - they dried like little pebbles - rock solid and with a heaps of weight to them. They were also going extremely blue where I cleaned them off - almost black, so I expect they'll be strong little suckers - I just hope they are safe to eat.

Thats awesome Otto. Today I harvested 2 casings that were in aluminum foil trays and there was like 2 or 3 shrooms growing out of each hole in the bottom of foil.

Mushrooms are fucking WEIRD.

No smells at all - Im sure they are fine - just a bit paranoid of late - I developed a patch of green mould on the casing layers of two of the pots shortly after I hravested them.

Yeah they were strong but gave a lot of nausea - I threw out the old mycelium just yesterday, and there was a LOT of green mould in the middle of the pot. I immediately threw out the rest of the stash when I noticed that... not good at all and could have *possibly* explained the nausea.

I saved half a jar of colonised bird seed, dug a small hole in the pot and buried it as a chunk. I covered it back over with a bit of the soil, put some leftover mushroom compost (from spawning) over the top and kept it watered. Not much was happening except the compost was getting colonised so I put a handfull of casing soil on top, and they popped up in the next couple of days.

Not much effort was involved, other than a bit of persistant spraying once or twice a day - otherwise I think this could easily get a lot better - imagine a little fairy ring of shrooms popping up from around the edge of the pot as a feature for your house plant!

DUDE! thats exactly what i wanted to start doing!!!! i wanted to get the shrooms and arrange them by size and color and let em grow! i was thinking of using very small planter pots and arranging them so that you dont really see that theyre pots. then in each pot i was gonna put different spores of different strains. if i arranged them by size and color it could make some pretty impressive little thingies. then put little fairies and stuff on em. itd be awesome!

anyways, i got a ways to go before i can do that.

dragon just to let you know it has to be fully colonised substrate not just spores ... i seriously doubt spores would work but you could give it a shot but you cant beat your fruiting chamber and sterilised substrate it will give them the best chance and then once colonized then fill your pots up. Spent cakes should work but once again if your going to the bother of doing all the different sizes then just do new substrate ull get more mushies and more chance of 100% sucess

Very cool thread - but my midn baffels as to why you would want to get rid of them from your pot. Looks very natural, and most people (including police) could not identify an cube.
