What albums have blown you away recently?

...or at the very least tickled your proverbial fancies?
At the moment I'm bowled over by:
The Beatles - Past Masters Vol 2: All the singles & B-sides not on albums from the time of Rubber Soul onwards - fucking outstanding "Paaaaaperbaaaaack Wriiiiiiteeeer, writer-writer"
Can't seem to stop playing Abbey Road & the White album at the moment too.
Jimi Hendrix - First Rays of the Rising Sun: Izabella, Drifting, Dolly Dagger, My Friend, Bellybutton Window etc, this guy would have only got better and better if he'd lived.
Thievery Corporation - The Cosmic Game: Wow, kinda like the laid back lounge version of Shpongle (though not quite that good). Mixed bag of Eastern & Latin American styles, but from the David Byrne sung track "The Heart's a Lonely Hunter" it's plain sailing - cool.
My Morning Jacket - Z: For many reasons, but especially for the track "Off the Record" which starts off sounding like The Clash and ends up sounding like Floyd. Oh and for the lyric "A kitten on fire, A baby in a blender, both sound as sweet as a night of surrender"
Led Zeppelin 1,2,3,4 & Houses of the Holy: Not a huge Zeppelin fan but I got all these for around ?20 recently and they all help me start the day with a raucous bang.
Okay so this is a pretty derivative thread but I'm bored and always on the lookout for more trippy music.
So what music can't you put down at the mo.....?

I have been listening to alot of live shows, but the first disc to Seasons by Sound Tribe is my current hottie. Along with Recipe for Hate by Bad Religion. Oh, and I have been on an old school thrash kick lately, too. Predominately D.R.I. and Suicidal Tendencies.

Recently this album destroyed all music for me.

This album is so incredible it doesn't even make sense. The playing is so perfect, the songs are so complex and deep and well thought out and written. AND THE SOLOS. These guys have wrecked the mold and built a beautiful city in it's place.
Even if you are not a fan of metal you should listen to this album all the way through. Take a second after words and think about what was put into this work, the hours and hours of writing and practice. This was not slapped together by some jam band who played in one key for the whole record and it was okay if you fell off time or went out of key. Bullshit. People say metal isn't music. These ARE the greatest musicians on earth. They are up there with Mozart and Beethoven.

Listened to a couple of songs and they aren't bad. The growling vocals are an instant turnoff for me though.
Here are some recent albums that have been stuck on my playlist melting my brain.
Mars Red Sky - Mars Red Sky (Phychedelic/Stoner Rock) Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats - Blood Lust (70s sounding doomish metalish stuff) Monkey3 - Beyond the Black Sky (Instrumental Stoner/Space Rock) Thy Catafalque - Rengeteg (Avant-Garde/Progressive Metal)

Thanks for having an open mind, but if you gawk at this you obviously understand very little about what actually goes into music and how to write it.

Thank you for giving it a try, if you ignore the vocals and focus on the drum, guitar, bass, you'll see just how incredibly well this album was put together. It's ridiculous how much thought and effort must have been put into this work. The melodic structure of the ENTIRE thing is so ridiculously sound it seems as if it's welded together.

Life experience really. A metal band on par with classical composers? Rather naive.

The thing is, they really are up to par and if not now writing more complex, technical and experimentally superior music. The infamous classical composers are not gods, yes they wrote some incredibly beautiful and well written music but it's not the end all, nothing could ever touch that shit, that people make it out to be. I know my music theory and I have a VERY solid understanding of music. Metal today IS the most well written and technically well played music out there. Metal musicians ARE truly the best players on earth, and they are so well rounded. No one can touch them, they are so good at playing that they don't write melodic music simply because it's too simple to take progressions that have existed for thousands of years and just rewrite them over and over again. They experiment and push music further and further to it's limits.
Close mindedness like yours prevents music from growing.

Do you not understand that saying metal musicians "ARE truly the best players on earth" is very, VERY close-minded?

Im not close minded, but I guess I don't see anything particularly modern about what they're playing music theory-wise. I guess if were gonna compare orchestral music to rock, this band really doesn't get to the same Zappa-esque musical theory level.
That said, itd be absurd to compare 20th century orchestral music to anything rock has produced, there just simply isn't the same level of experimentation in rock. Nowhere close to it actually. Only jazz had the same spirit of experimentation I think. Sure Zappa, Beefheart, the residents, other such bands experimented a fair amount; but it just is nothing at all like what went on in orchestral music
