Am I okay with only NAT and no firewall
    #5330822 - 02/23/06 08:10 AM (17 years, 11 months ago)

my router has a built in firewall and NAT. I keep running into problems keeping a port open for my BitTorrent program. Even though i keep messing with port forwarding, I can't seem to get it right except when I disable the firewall. When the router's firewall is set to off, it says that it only uses NAT for security. Is that good enough?

you need to set up a static IP when forwarding ports - that's the source of your problem.

I always leave the firewall function turned off on my router, just to keep those few extra clock cycles for speed

With the way NAT functions, it's essentially a firewall anyway. You can most likely get away fine with only NAT on your router.

On a side note: what type of router do you have and what bittorrent client are you using?

I have a SMC Barricade router and use BitTornado which I have set to UPNP for the ports. It always works fine and sets its own ports using the router's UPNP feature.

I have an actiontek router and I use Azureus. I also already have the hub set to static IP.
