water problems?
    #533029 - 01/27/02 01:38 PM (23 years, 22 days ago)

Hello everybody,
I am currently helping out two of my friends with their setups. Both of the them are using pf tek. One already has 18 jars in the terrarium and the other we just made a bunch of jars and inoculated them. The 18 jars are hooked up to a cool-mist, but really aren't producing shit. We got about 5 grams, but not much else has happened since then.

The other bunch of jars was created two weeks ago. We got this vermiculite that seemed to be very fine. Mixed it up with water and brown rice flower then pressure cooked it at 17 psi for 1 hour. It seemed kind of dry before and after I pressured cooked it. We incoulated it, but there is almost no sign of germination. There is one spot where that is a very feint spot of what I think is mycilium around where we inoculated the jar, but it isn't bright white.

Could all this be the cause of not using the correct measuring cups. Should I get a graduated cylinder?
Any help I could get would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Make sure your conditions on those cakes are good. You'll want good humidity, proper air exchange, good tempurate and give them atlest 10-15 mintues of light a day.

Yes, you should invest in some good measuring cups.

For PF style cakes I use 1/2cup verm, 1/4cup BRF or DRF and 1/4cup water. Both the water and BRF/DRF can be reduced a little but it is best to work out the best substrate by yourself as those are ballpark figures.

Also, a wise man once gave a great tip on this message board. You want to wet the vermiculite with the water first, then, coat the damp vermiculite with your flour source.

Hope that helps.

i am not sure about the first 18 jars but you should get way more than 5grams. It sounds like the others my be too dry. The mycelium won't grow without moisture. If you inoculated 2 weeks ago and don't see anything you are certain is mycelium in any of them by now that is bad. What temp have you been keeping them at? It should be 80-85F. for optimum growth. If you have had them at a decent temp and see nothing in 5 more days the only thing you could try would be to add some water. I have never done this and don't know if it has been done sucessfully but personally I try anything before i throw any jars away. If are are going to chunk it anyways then you can't "hurt" it any further. good luck.

I forgot to say that my friends didn't have enough money to buy a timer for the 18 cakes, but we are going to try to pull it around. For the other jars, we will try putting some more water in them otherwise make some more cakes. With the correct mearusements and maybe some different vermiculite. Thanks for your imput.
