When the other more common Panaeolus species (even lawn ones) start first popping up in the spring, it should be a sign to start looking for subbalteatus. The horse farm sounds like a good place. If you talk to the farmer, it wouldn't hurt to ask him where he discards the manure - so you could look there.

I wouldn't look in fields with horses to the exclusion of cow pastures. I?ve found bountiful fruiting in both cow and horse manure. Enough for a year?s supply can occasionally be collected in one hunt, which is saying something considering the relative lack of potency with this species of Panaeolus. Interestingly enough I have observed the non active Panaeolus semiovatus restricted to horse manure. With persistence subbalteatus can be found growing in a variety of nutrient dense substrates in association with farm animals. If you have the space transplanting to an outdoor patch is easily accomplished. Good luck and don?t be discouraged by the trickery of Panaeolina! georgem

many of these farmers/ranchers know the mushrooms and have tried them at least once, he may not be fooling anyone but himself, the fields I have picked from I was shown where to find the actives by the farmers and often a few stories were shared on the hunt.
