Bird seed (successfull brands)

Well I went to buy some bird seed to grow and then turns out that there is a huge variety of bird seed! Some being really really cheap which is good =P and some being way expensive. The cheap kind had some sunflowers but not much so I could get them all out. Will the cheap kind grow just as good of shrooms as expensive or even grow myc and shrooms at all?
What brands have you guys used?
Thnx

I like to buy the cheapest wild bird seed I can find.
The expensive stuff usually has more sunflower seeds in it. Good for birds, bad for mushroom cultivators. Also the expensive stuff often has fungicides added to it, very bad for mushroom cultivators. Oh ya..and the cheap stuff is well CHEAPER.

Bird Ration from Wal-Mart works wonders. It's only $0.94 for 4 lbs. It has sunflower seeds in there but they have never posed a problem. I never remove the sunflower seeds.

If there is a PetsMart store in your area.
Try BIRD BASICS brand WBS.
 40 lb bag @ $7 or $8 bucks - each.

Your terminology is off. Are you asking how much colonized WBS you should use for manure or what? I need you to rephrase the question please.

I like to use about a 1:4 ratio of grain spawn to poo, by volume and just eye balled.
It's not hurting anything to buy a little extra because it will keep. I've alway seen it sold by 30Lb or 40Lb bags.

For 10 pounds I would recommend about 7 quart jars of colonized WBS.

Wronguy are you thinking of ten pounds dry?
I think he said pasteurized which I can only assume means that it's already at the right mosture content and full of water, so you get a lot less volume. 7 quart jars seems like too much, might be something like a 1:1 ratio, but it's hard to make estimations just by trying to visual it.
I weighed up 10 pounds of pasteurized poo before, but that was months ago. I think I used about 6-8 full PINT jars for a good ratio.
Mike I don't know what kind of pressure cooker you have but that's how I decide how much grain spawn I'm going to make, by how much will fit in a single run of pressure cooking.

My petsmart does not have Bird Basics... going there after work to try and order it.
other than that the 4lb bags of BIrd Ration work great, but suck when you buy 8 or more... the walmart people are like" got alot of birds???"

Sometimes PETCO stores, also have Bird Basics WBS.
Another good source is BULK FOOD STORES. (WinCo & the like)
Often, bulk WBS is about $0.16 cents a pound.

No, I use a lot of spawn. If you can get by with smaller amounts, so be it. I prefer more spawn to limit my wait times. I don't use ratios simply because I have a lot of materials on hand at any one time.

You & I are alike, on that one.
I don't measure spawn to substrate ratio.
Other that insure it is ABOUT a 20 to 25% spawn to substrate. (on an eyeball basis)

50lbs- $10 @ my wally world. I prep it with the soak & simmer in my sig. The sunflower seeds aren't a problem, but if you want to get rid of them, pour them out with the water you used for steaming them. They float along with the broken seeds. You can keep adding a little water and pouring out the floaters until they are nearly all gone.
Once rinsed, the bird kote doesn't hurt anything that I've noticed. I'm not quite sure what bird kote actually is, but looking at the ingredients on the bag, I don't see anything bad. They even include calcium carbonate.
The premium stuff is Pennington's Finch Seed. No sunflower seed and it includes thistle seed (like Spawn Mate). Problem with this kind is that it's more expensive and you don't get as much.
