Pinning help...
    #5328518 - 02/22/06 04:18 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

I have tried everything to get my cakes to pin...

I have cold shocked (left in the fridge for 24 hours).
I have tried vermiculite and perlite for humidification (95% humidity)
I have tried direct and indirect sunlight.
I have them currently at a temperature of 15-20 degrees celcius.
But 2 of them are turning blue... Why are the cakes turning blue?

Any suggestions? This is my first attempt at growing so any suggestions at all would help.

Okay, you've told us what you tried, but not how or when you tried it. Did you dunk/cold shock immediately after coming from the jar? Did you roll the cake in vermiculite? Did you use saturated perlite on the bottom of your terrarium to increase humidity? Did you allow the sunlight to be on it for up to 12 hours/day?

The blueing is bruising. Don't worry about it, just try not to handle the cake as much.

How long have these cakes been in the fruiting chamber? Sometimes it takes nearly 2 weeks to get pins. Try to be patient and read as much as you can.

Yes, I cold shocked right after birthing. I did not roll the cake in vermiculite, and i have no clue what that is... I used a weird system on the bottom... i have an inch of water and a plastic mat held up with screws then duct taped in place... then i have vermiculite covering the top of the plastic mat then i have perlite over top of that... then i have a hepa filter on each side to regulate air flow... The cakes have been in the chamber for 1 week... and yes i have 12 hours of sunlight on the cakes....

Looks like they need to get laid..

After they were colonized did you dunk them and cold shock them? What I always do, is take the cake out of the jar, put it in some water in a bowl and throw it in the 'fridge. Leave it there for around 24 hours. This should induce the pinning as long as you have FAE and light. Oh and of course the right temperatures.

Okay, I hope you have some extra perlite, because here's what you're gonna have to do. Go get your perlite and a large mixing bowl. Put in enough perlite so that you'll have 1-2 inches on the bottom of your terrarium, then pour in water until the water line is above the line of perlite and then just a little bit of h2o2. Stir that up a bit and let it sit a moment or two. Then drain off all the excess water.

Take your cakes out carefully and put them in a clean environment. Then go outside and dump out everything you have in your terrarium. Then wipe it down w/ some alcohol/or h2o2/or water with very little bleach if you want to be safe, but it's not necessary. Now put in your saturated perlite. Now, if you've got the jar lids, put those down on top of the perlite so you can set the cakes on them.

Wow you really need to follow the teks bro! First off get that verm out of there use perlite only for humidity. Your cakes are turning blue most likely because they are dry, yes dry! Mist your cakes good and read my pinning strategy and read it again until you totally understand what it says. Also it's gonna take time so be patient. GL

No I don't think so, you want some evaporation and not 100%.

The case will dry out through the growing phase

Your cakes will be fluffy with an actual RH of 95% not blue. I think your hygrometer is off. Either way 95-98% is where you want to be at this stage with cakes. GL
