Trouble Pinning, any ideas?
    #5328006 - 02/22/06 01:02 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

First post, but frequent the FAQ/Teks...

Hello all. I made about 12 quarts of WBS using the Tek using Treasure Coast, Puerto Rican, and Classic strains.

I decided to use the horse poo substrate for my casing, along with a simple verm/h20 mix for the casing layer.

The poo I got was from a stable, and at I didn't realize it needed to be leached of ammonia and used about half my jars on casings (total of 8 large tins). It took the first three about 2 weeks to show any decent signs of colonization (Treasure Coast). After 3 or 4 days after casing the first three, I did the last 5.

Now it's been about 3 weeks, and because of the slow colonization rate (I assume b/c of ammonia) all but 2 of the casings were contammed. Anway, I put these two in my chamber, removed the foil covering, keep the humidity up, and the temp around 71-73. The temp in my TIT was around 84-86.

So these bitches have been in the chamber for about a week, but absolutely no pins have shown up. Scared that I was screwing something up, I decided to empty a WBS colonized jar in the grow chamber and at least get some fruits (Ive done the same thing before with BRF/Verm and the casing didnt fruit but the cake did), but even the cake won't fruit.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas why I'm not experiencing fruiting? I'm currently triple/quadruple leaching some horse poo to try again with my remaining jars...Here's a pic.

Thanks!

if i were u i would get some perlite and use that for humidity in a sterilite container the perlite will go at the bottom dampened...i used my tit incubator as my grow chamber due to i wanted it all in one place and i used dampened perlite at the bottom cause i was having pinning troubles too but those casings looked wrecked man and look like they still need some time in the incubator but those cakes are deff ready

i have tried to fruit wbs as a cake, and i got nothing... but "just" cased wbs produces results...

the far left pan looks like it has some form of cobweb, kinda grayish looking myc.

but all in all... seriously those casing trays look like they have been through hell and back. kinda like you "THREW" a bunch of ingredients together and went ":BAM:" like Emeril.

actually i took my time with the casings, the pic looks worse than the reality. i had some discoloration due to using bmp instead of jpeg for file size. thats not cobweb mold, although i did chunk one casing due to that. should i have let the myc grow longer? i was afraid of overlay...

about the perlite, what do you mean? just put a layer of perlite in the bottom of the chamber?

and oatman, what do you mean by "just" cased wbs produces results.."

Vermiculite makes a poor casing layer. Next time use a mixture of coir and verm (simplest) or peat and verm (better, but you need to adjust the pH of the peat.)

To initiate pinning you need to expose the mycelium to light, about 95% humidity (for casings drop it down to about 85% AFTER pinning.), and they need fresh air exchange.

Once you have created and maintained this environment you need to give them time. I've heard of pinning taking two weeks, however mine usually pin in about one week (+ - a day)

What are you using as a fruiting chamber? What are the conditions like?

yea.. IMO i would go with Verm and Peat. 50/50

coir is used as a substrate, and colonizes too rapidly.

What i mean by just cased WBS produces rexsults... means that if you Don't do the poo. i find...

(ALL IN MY OPINION) (don't rip my head off people)

... That you can get a better pinset. Then in turn produce more.. Maybee not Weight wise. but more Fruits.

I wouldn't want to have a single fruit weighing 30g. dry That's just silly.

Exaples of Cased Wbs, not spawned to poo...

First of all horse poo should be aged one year in other words last years shit works best IME. It's a total different animal a year later no leaching required. At least thats the way the pros do it  Read my pinning strategy to learn more about pinning and casings. GL

my fruiting chamber is a clear, plastic closet from walmart (20$) and some lumber cut up for shelves. got a ultrasonic on timed operation, 7 minutes 20 times a day. light also on timer. 've been fanning it out at least 3 times a day.

flipped one of the casings out to find it hadnt colonized all the way through...still think this is due to ammonia.

but in the future i will use a casing layer other than mere vermiculite...

it might be just the color of the verm... but i think that casing looks really dry. if it isnt then its the color of the verm. def use a 50/50 or a 60/40 casing layer next time.

better luck next time!

next time you should pay attention to evening your casing layer and shallowing the depth of it. It doesnt look very colonized which could explain the poor pinset.

other then that your mushies look nice, patience = k3y
