is uneven pinset a big deal?
    #5327777 - 02/22/06 12:08 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

3/4 of my casing looks ready to be left alone. i could patch it to let the other 1/4 "catch up" but i thought i'd ask..

its really not important to me if all my mushrooms dont grow at once. The real concern is my total yield. Has anyone done a comparison of yield with uneven pinset to a yield with even pinset? if its 100g/square foot instead of 90g/square foot then its really not a big deal to me.

It would actually be easier because its quite a chore for my gf to pick them all at once while im gone. She'd prefer smaller, multiple harvests that you'd probably get with an uneven pinset..

But then again, if the yield comparison is significant, then we'll patch..

If your goal is total yeild then pinset is important! Mushrooms grow as a flush, so the first pins that start will be the only ones. Its the difference between these (about double yeild).

But remember, it is ALOT more then just patching that gives the nice even pinset. It comes with practice and time, and a little luck sometimes.

or

Even in that last picture, look closely. The one closest to you is a much better yeild and tub, by only a little, but enough to make it worth it. Notice the same two tubs (as in the last picture) a little earlier and the better pinset on the closest one that gave the better yeild.

Same tub again but earlier, notice the closest one (to the right), the pins are smaller then the other tub, but they are more EVEN with eachother. The tub further has varied pin sizes leading to patches of no mushrooms..

Razman read my pinning strategy if you want prolific pinsets.

How much time and practice does it take one to get such an even piset and such full yelds? How many times did you grow before you narrowed you procedure down to a T?

One of the biggest things ive learned about getting good pinsets.
is even colonizition of the case(it take time to make sure that your subsrtate is evenly spread, and that your casing is even) also. i like to incubate the casings at about 78F. It takes a bit longer to colonize but you have a better control over the MYC popping up.

*take note shrooms popped up around the MYC, not on it.
