Glass Wool

Ever heard of glass wool? It's quite possibly the least pleasant thing on earth.
I've got countless little bits and peices of it broken off in the skin of my hands. It's like wearing gloves made of fiberglass insulation.

This stuff is driving me mad, it's itchy and ocasionally painful. The worst part is the individual strands are virtually invisible, so I can't see them to pluck them out. I have to wait for all of them to get infected and fester their way out of my skin, which could take days.
I still have the stuff in one of the pockets of my lab coat too... I hope it doesn't find it's way into the inside. Oh lord how that would drive me insane.
Moral of the story: avoid glass wool, avoid it like the plague.

Oddly enough, I did pocket it, but just to transport it back to my locker (where we keep our supplies).
I was just too distracted to put the damn stuff back, the lab we were doing was pretty time consuming. I was 40 minutes late to finish as it was.
That included spending 20 minutes trying to pick the damn shards out of my hands with tweezers while waiting on my beaker sitting in an ice bath to cool.
I hate this stuff! before I picked about half of the stuff out of my hands, it felt like diatamaceous earth probably does to insects with an exoskeleton.

On a serious note, I'll throw it away the first chance I get. And from now on I'm going to substitute filter paper in it's place. It is the devil, THE DEVIL.

I got a shit-ton of fiberglass dust in my hands/arms and that sucked for a few days. So I can imagine strands of something wouldn't be too pleasant either.

Tried using duct tape to remove it? Press and peel? Should pull any out that have a bit sticking out.

Woah, that's actually not a bad idea, theoretically. I mean, it would probably hurt like hell whether successful or not, but it might be worth a go...

That's a good idea, I'm going to try that. It's definitely better than waiting the days it will take to work itself out.
Showering this morning was murder. Every time I tried to scrub myself it pushed some of the slivers in deeper and it hurt.

Hey Konnrade, just curious as to whether or not you gave the duct tape thing a shot and/or whether or not it worked..

The duct tape doesn't work worth a damn. My job is cleaning fiberglass duct board and duct cleaning so needless to say I deal with the shit everyday its really not to bad just quit being a bitch is all heh. Other then that a cold shower helps a little.

Hey Konnrade, just curious as to whether or not you gave the duct tape thing a shot and/or whether or not it worked..
I went downstairs after reading that suggestion, wanting to try it out. I then discovered that there was not a single inch of duct tape at all. So I just waited around for it to work it's way out. By one or two days later it ceased to bother me at all.
But when I went to empty out my lab coat it had embedded itself everywhere. I had to use a lint roller to get rid of all the little fragments. And one more peice broke off in my left thumb when I handled the stuff, just to put it into a plastic baggie.
I had to wash my lab coat just to make sure none of it was left inside. It needed a wash anyways, though. I took the opportunity to bleach it and wash with bluing to maintain a bright, blinding white color
Then I spent a good hour starching and ironing it. I give my lab coat WAY too much attention.

I bought 10 kilos of perlite and each time I needed to take some a fine cloud of whitish dust would form.
It felt like hell on my respiratory tract
Even when I was wearing a mask it still managed to finds its way on and in me
Is it bad that I accidentally bumped this really old thread if people actually have something to post thats not off-topic?

Those paper or cloth masks do absolutely nothing except make your face sweaty.
I wouldn't want to be around anything I was worried about without an actual respirator (half-face, cartridges).
The way this bump went down made me lol.

You didn't bump it, some newb did. I moved his post and any replies to the dump but apparently you responded to someone else so the bump stuck. Fucking newbs and their responding to 5 year old posts.

grinding concrete a couple of months ago I slapped on a respirator, covered my head and donned safety glasses, told the guy I was working for to get out of the room while I was doing it, he said he'd be OK, I warned him again it was gonna get nasty, he's liek "I'll stand way over here". 30 seconds later he couldnt see me and ran outside to start puking
