Casing question?
    #5326848 - 02/22/06 01:22 AM (17 years, 11 months ago)

This is my first time doing casings so im still trying to get the basics down. Im planning on using rye grain for the substrate and the casing layer from vermiculite & coco coir. I was wondering how many inoculated quart jars should I put in a container that was 12x7x4. I have appox. 8cc left of both Cambodian and Equador strains after starting with cakes. If I put each strain in separate container could I put them both beside each other in the growing chamber?

Alright, first thing's first.  If you haven't already bought the coir, I'd advise you try a peat based casing layer to start out, since although coir is a viable casing layer, it often colonizes too quickly and results in overlay for newer cultivators.

Now your question can be answered by doing some simple mathematics.  12x7x4=336 cubic inches.  Google tells me there are 57.75 cubic inces in a quart.  336/57.75 = 5.8 quarts (so aim for 5.5, because it's easier working in half quart incriments).  Now you've got to remember that finished jars of grain tend to be about 1/2 to 3/4 the way full, so depending on your situation just adapt that math, meaning if your quart jars are half full, you'll need like 11 jars to fill that casing tray.

Now you don't want to put two different strains together in one casing.  They'll compete against each other, waste energy, and end up with only one strain fruiting rather pitifully.  If you want, you can just put a divider in your casing tray.

I hope that helped, good luck
