Hi, could anyone tell me what mushroom this is:

I live in Western Australia, its summer here at the moment. This mushroom has no Cap so to speak of, just like a little ball of white. Has tiny little dotted bumbs on the surface (lots of them, pinpoint type). One showed up a few days ago, and has dies off, now this one sprung up anout 10cm away from the dying one. Any ideas??? Are they edible, medicinal??

It's a puffbal, I was thinking something like Calvatia subcretacea sp. a puffball. They are of choice edibility if the spore mass is white and not changing to brown or green.

Thanks for the reply, any idea of how to make a spore print of one of these?? Ive heard if youe slice them down the middle it should be a solid white colour throughout, if so, where and how do i get the spores from this mushroom?

It is probably a puffball, but some species of amanita look like that when they are very young. If it is a puffball, then you won't find spores when it is solid throughout. If you wait until it is a bit older, it won't be as fleshy and it will be full of spores. Once that happens you can just put a piece of paper over it and squeeze and you'll get lots of spores. Also, waiting a bit will tell you if it is an amanita.

sweet, well its in my back garden, so it would be sweet if an amanita just decided to pop up there, lol. Ill leave it for a while (how long u rekon??) and see if it is one, otherwise ill proly just use the spores and start growing a small patch in my garden for cooking. Anybody know how to cultivate these? (puffball's that is), like what substrates to use etc.

Well if it is amanita (which is unlikely), it is probably not A. muscaria but rather some poisonous variety. So it is not that 'sweet.' As far as how long to wait, I would just touch it every day - as long as it is fleshy and firm, it doesn't likely have a lot of spores. When it starts to feel a bit hollow and the skin gets a little brittle, then there will be spores. Not sure how long it will take.
Very cool find though. Nice pics too

It is a puffball, an edible, not poisonous.

That looks like one of the more common terrestrial puffballs. It should have white flesh on the inside if cut open. This is how the edibility is mainly determined for the various puffball species (cut them down the middle). The puffballs that have a brownish or dark inside have the chance of being poisonous. Also like other stuff, once they begin to degrade and rot, they should be avoided from an edibility perspective.

They do remind me of big golf balls. I found one on a lawn that I spotted while I was driving from a long distance away. At first I thought it was a soccer ball from a distance, but it looked too big to be. When I came up on it, I realized it was a giant puffball. The thing was bigger than a basketball/volley ball/soccer ball. After I had brought it back, my friend kicked it hard into a tree and it exploded into white chunks all over the place.
