Curious about the alleged new species in the bay area
    #5326068 - 02/21/06 09:15 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

I havnt been around for a while. But Im curious, is "friscosa" the official name? Also, the supposed azures found in richmond, whats the status on that? Has there been a confirmation?

its still speculation, and the name is un-official, but i really doubt its Cyanofib.

Heres a good thread about it. Near the end someone from the SF Mycological society made a really good post. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/5075847/an/0/page/1

Also aweia has been a great contributor.

why is that?...Because a thorough identification hasn't been done yet?

It's probably a good idea for people to be careful with this new species unless you're 100% sure about it. They bruise blue just like cyanescens does, and they smell the same, and they grow in the same habitat, but they don't look like cyans and they don't look like the cyanofibrillosa photos either.

What needs to happen in the future is test patches outside, fresh fruiting, samples brought to the SF Mycological Society, etc. I suspect there are more than a couple strains/ possible species involved here. One type could be cyclonic mycelium, another might not.

We'll never know unless this is carefully seperated and documented and compared.

It makes it that much more difficult because it does appear to be changing from year to year. It could be changing weather patterns, new types of woodchips...who knows?

Do you Bay Area folks ever feel like this is Mother Natures test tube?...I sure get that feeling sometimes.

Seriuosly tho, this will just take time from year to year to better understand what's going on..In the meantime, we can always try and get more photos. That always helps

And next year during the season, attend the MSSF meetings and fair, connect with those people. The bigger the variety of samples we can get, the better we can find out what's going on here

they are a species that is being discussed here in the bay area.

They are weird because they dont Key out to any of the species in the cyan complex 100%.

there is talk of them being named a new species. Its not official yet, but ill eat my foot if it turns out to be Cyanofib.

by the way, San Francisco is has been used to name a native organism before, so it wouldn't be a stretch to name it for this species..I refer to the famous sourdough bread > Lactobacillus sanfrancisco
