problems with b+
    #532263 - 01/26/02 05:28 PM (22 years, 2 months ago)

I innoculated two jars two weeks ago and i am still not seeing any growth. I might have put a little too much water in but i dont know if that will prevent growth or not. I sterilized the jars and substrate with a microwave for 8 minutes on high and sterilized the lid with rubbing alcohol. what's the deal?

No growth after 2 weeks means something is wrong. You need to follow the tek step by step with no exceptions for it to work. Dont use a microwave. Cover your jars with foil. Put your jars in a pot and fill with water half way up the sides. Low boil for an hour. I seriously suggest getting a pressure cooker to have better success.

i live in a dorm with a community kitchen. Its either the microwave way or no way. I've read posts where people say they only use a microwave and they have never had any problems. I guess what my main question is, is how much does the amount of water play in the growth?

If your substrate is soggy and dripping, if theres a puddle at the bottom, you have a problem. Substrate should be moist but not soggy. Too much water will prevent mycelial growth and will encourage contaminants.

oh and be careful growing in the dorm ok? =)

I used not regular water but honeyed water for the substrate mix and it caramelized during sterilization, giving the B+ in mine big trouble colonizing. Now I've got a B+ cake from that batch and I'm waiting to see it's progress. I'm going to post a new thread about that in a week or so.

The microwave will, most likely, dry your cakes to a hard crisp unless you had some kind of water in there. Explain your microwave sterilization tek.

I, too, have been waiting for my B+'s to germinate. 8 days now. Don't know what the heck's going on. I'm a 1st timer too, and I was expecting to see something by now. Jaybin's already told me about his 2 week germination and I feel a bit(little bit) better because we live in the same dry-ass climate. Keep us posted. Since you're growing in a dorm, you should check out "Hippies neglect tek" at www.fanaticus.com. If you're trying to conceal your shrooms it seems to be the way to go (although I'm just repeating what I read. 1st time myself.). I'll post it on this thread if my little guys ever do germinate.

Just thought I'd add that I've read that too much moisture can greatly slow germination. If you don't see any contamination (funny colors or dark spots) you may still be able to save them by loosening the jar lids to let out some moisture. You'll know to do this if you see excess moisture pooling in the bottom. l only speak from study, not experience. Don't take the jar lids all the way off though. Best of luck to ya!

What temps are you two keeping your innoculated jars at? If they are too cold it may be slowing your b+ some.

One more thing 1st timer. You've got to read a thread started just hours ago. I think it was"need advice from a pro by tomatofarmer". These guys know much more than I and are talking about drying cakes that are too wet. If there's no contamination, there may still be hope.

B+ are often a slow strain to colonise - but microwave sterilisation doesnt work for substrate - maybe liquid media but thats it...

hey,
My first time ever growing I used B+. My first jar colonized 100% in 1 week. 2 jars @ 100% the next day and about 5 in 3 days, the rest took 6 days longer.

Used BRF/Verm, sterilized in a boiling pot and had no contamination problems except 1. Incubated at 82 degrees in a cooler...

Could be your spores, are they new or what?

Hell yeah they're new. I don't know what to think. I inoculated the same day I got 'em, in jars prepped two days before. I had them at about 75 degrees though. Today I moved them to a warmer spot (about 85) in hopes they'll do something. I bought from a vendor that has a great reputation for customer service though. If I don't see anything in a couple of days I'll see what he can do for me. I was going to order more syrings off him anyway.

B+ one week (5-7 days) after innoculation?? ha! how big were your jars 100ml?? The fastest ive ever seen a 250ml/half pint fully colonise (with invirto pinning) from innoculation is nine days (thai - Ko Samui).

I inoculated my 6 half pint brf/verm jars 4 days ago, and Im seeing varied results. But Im very sure that these results are based purely on the amount of spores i ijected into each jar. I wasnt keeping an eye on the number of cc's and some recived more than others. I have 2-3 jars with some nice growth, like about 7-15%....whereas the others are doing fine, but a little slower, maybe 5-7%.....Ive increased the incubation temp from 75-80degrees to 85degrees, and Im hoping that will speed it up a little more.
Im a complete begginer myself and started with the B+ for thier reputation of being very forgiving to us newbies....and if you follow the Tek's down to the last little sentence, u wont have a problem. I invested in a very nice pressure cooker, I think one of those will save you alot of time and money in the long run......Im looking forward to seeing these puppies grow, and feel pretty confident......always do your homework, and u will never fail!
