i don't find poppies to be aesthically pleasing, to me they look like some kind parasitic worm.

I've seen microscope images of intestinal worms, and I agree... poppy pods on the stems look eerily similar to those parasites.
But then again, I don't really think it's common to use them alone as decorations. They're normally mingled as a part of a floral arrangement, which might allow them to have their best attributes emphasized while downplaying their worse attributes.
A good florist can do things like that, it's impressive.
In a few months when they've grown up, I'll show you mine. They're tiny little buggers right now, just seedlings. Here are some photos of a few weeks ago, they've grown a couple more leaves since then, and are a little sturdier. I still had to use toothpicks to prop up two of them though. I'm hoping they will live.

two or three times would be enough for some sort of physical dependency to start developing. I don't know how long it would take before nasty withdrawals would result, but as a rule it's normally a lot sooner than you'd probably expect, assuming you were optimistic.

You could easily be perfectly fine, but of course it's a possibility that you'll have some withdrawals. To be honest I don't really know, my experience with opium is nonexistant as of yet. My first crop is still a bunch of cute little baby plants.
Someone with a good deal of experience on the subject could provide more insight. Hopefully Wiccan_Seeker can reply to you. He's one of the shroomery's experts on poppies and opium.
