Try the search feature in the future. I cannot begin to count the number of times this exact question has been asked, and I've only been posting for like 2-3 months.
Vermiculite is used for water retention purposes in casing layers and substrates.
Saturated perlite is used to increase humidity by increasing moisture surface area. If you were to put them side by side, it would become abundantly clear that they are two completely different things.
If you're having trouble finding verm, make sure you check the gardening section of lowes (this is where many people get it), or your local nursery. You could even check commercial insulation suppliers, as verm is commonly used as insulation. If all else fails, just get it online.

For what it's worth though, I have grown...uh...tomatoes in nothing but pearlit and vermiculite mixed. Used a ghetto ebb/flow system. It was awesome. I know it's off topic, but so what.

For the purpose of "tomatoes", perlite may work fine and dandy in soil. But it's not a very good additive to a substrate which will be colonized by mycelium. It can be done. I know people have done it in the past. But it is in no way ideal. I mean, hell, RR has grown on money, bud, and clothing, but those were in no way ideal conditions, and I doubt they produced very large or potent mushies.
