I need a cover for all these grains..
    #5323468 - 02/21/06 10:18 AM (17 years, 11 months ago)

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but i'm always trying to think of a good way to cover the fact that i'm growin. Almost all of the products that I use are household items that no one would associate with this particular hobby, but there are a few that kind of stick out. The 50lb bags of WBS ($2.99 @ Menards) are one of those things.
Besides a bird feeder, I've been trying to think of a better reason.

I was wondering if it was possible to do a home brewing type of thing with bird seed or rye grains, that would explain the grains and the agar. I searched around homebrew sites but none of the recipes called for WBS (go figure) or only rye grains. Any thoughts?

Couldn't you just store the bag in a shed or something, somewhere out of the way where guests wouldn't see it?

There in the basement, but I dont have a shed. They are out of the way, but still suspicious if anyone were to see them.

Tell them you're a nature photographer and you use the grains as "bait" to photograph wild animals

You could divide it in to smaller, ziploc bags and store it in many places. Or clean out a dresser drawer to lay it in.

I kinda like the photographer idea, i'm still thinking that a home brew op would be awesome because no one would know how much grain you needed to ferment...so 200 lbs might not seem ridiculous.

The ziploc idea is unrealisitic, i dont think i could even hide that many bags without having to put them in places like the silverware drawer

Only buy 50lb at a time, really feed the birds,  no one will ask questions.

50lb should make about 60 quarts which can be used to span quite a few tubs

I did hear of an incident with a landlord asking why the plummer found pounds & pounds of WBS clogging a pipe..

I would just get a freaking bird feeder....Either that or you can get construction paper, elmers glue, and sparkles, make some pictures with the bird seed and hang them up, then you wont have any friends to get curious about you.....

If someone I knew was making beer with bird seed, I would find that highly intresting. Just tell anyone who's curious that a family member (who's into birds) gave you the bag after you expressed intrest in their hobby. You were gracious enough to accept their gift, but haven't had the desire to buy a feeder yet.

Oh, I've got it. If anyone sees them and says anything, you can knock them out, then drug them so they've got something in their system. Then drive to a seedy hotel where you proceed to harvest their kidneys. Once you're done, you can leave them to wake up in a bathtub full of ice, and you can get some extra cash from selling their organs on the black market. You've gotta knock them out good though, so that memory loss incurs. Have fun.

First of all, you don't really use plain old grains to brew beer. You use malts. The difference being that the malts are encouraged to start to grow, then they are stopped from growing with heat. What this does is allow the sugars inside the grains more accessible. Putting regular grains in beer would do very little. Besides, I've found that alot of ppl want to learn about making beer. So this might have the reverse outcome of what you want. They will start poking around more instead of less, asking beer brewing questions, etc.

Go to the fabric store and buy some strong fabric. Then make yourself some hacky sacks or bean bags, or a bean filled chair! You don't even have to make anything, just keep the two together and say you're planning on making a bean bag chair or something. You could even keep your perlite and vermiculite bags there as well. The excuse being that you want to experiment with textures inside the bag.

You have to do quite a bit of meth to be sketch about birdseed.

If you live in an apartment and buying a dump truck full - then I'd have a cover story.

i have a problem with people always seeing mason jars sitting in the dry rack.

I actually tell em i am looking into making moonshine.... Everyone laughs, and expects me to also, and i don't

I say..."no really i am thinking of making moonshine" then they all get this serious face on..LOL it's funny.

i need to buy a cabinet with doors so i can store these things.... between these, Pressure cookers, and steep/simmer pots it takes up ALOT of space... my house is pretty big tho, i just hate to go to the basement everytime i wanna make a batch.

Just do what I do, grow some edibles and tell everyone who asks that you grow mushrooms

boom, end of story. No one would guess you'd just tell em strait up you are doing something illegal. You don't go to a hydro shop and ask em if the nutes would be good for marijuana

Lol, it was in a far, far, coroner of the galaxy. I think he said his name was Quincy. Though he is in a different space-time continuum now, his doppelganger is shadowing me.  :runaway:
