Growing Poppies
    #5316047 - 02/19/06 10:39 AM (18 years, 1 month ago)

I was thinking about growing some indoor poppies. I need some input on if its worth the time and effort.

Ill use a room approx 10x10 and from what i read in a post, you need about 10sq ft to yeild a gram of opium.

I work at a wholesale plant nursery so supplies arn't an issue

so...theoretically speaking, you should yield enough poppies to get 10 grams of opium....not that that would be your plan, of course. you just want decorations, right?

Wouldn't that only be enough to yield a gram (10x10 is 10 squared)?

It would be worth it if you enjoy the process... I don't know much about growing poppies indoor, but it doesn't seem like it would require too much time or effort (just supplies).

The effort wouldn't be what I'd worry about. To give adequate light to 10 cubic feet of plants would probably be a significant thing to add to the electric bill.

With weed plants that cost is offset, as each adult plant can theoretically yield up to $2,000 (if you're a ruthless businessman about it). But opium for personal use... that's not as easy to justify the cost with.

I don't think poppies like being indoors, but good luck!

If I were you I would just go out to some empty lots, or ditches along an out of the way road, or any place like that during the right time of the year and play johnny poppy seed. Poppies grow like weeds, so you shouldn't have a problem, and if you do that, you should definitely let some of the pods disperse their seeds.

Thanks for the replys.

Ill give that "Johnny poppy seed" idea some thought haha.

I wasnt looking to fill the entire room, but it is it true that approx 10 sq ft will yeild 1g of opium. Anyone have any experience, yeild-wise?

1'x1'=1'2
2'x2'=4'2
...
9'x9'=81'2
10'x10'=100'2

area is length x width, so 10'2 would be a 5'x2' or a 10'x1' room.

Um.. no man, I'm afraid not. 10'x 10' = 10 ft squared.

Unfortunately this is a situation where silly terminology matters because a plot 10 ft squared does not equal 10 square feet. 10 square feet would be like you said, 10 x 1 or 5 x 2. So now I'm kind of confusing myself. Did the poppies yeild 1 gram per 10 ft squared, or 10 square ft?

Yup, well, no. But they get misused and switched so often, that it doesn't really matter. when someone says ten square feet or ten feet squared, they generally mean the same thing: 1x10.

In any case, the original poster said the room is 10x10, which means they have 100 square feet.

Hell, even I missed that on the first time though.
