Thanks to the GSNC, i've realized how awesome Peas are! Many of us can't get Rye Berries, and almost every one who tries rye berries swear by them. I am now aware that Peas are way more nutritious than rye berries, and obviously more common. check out the attachment. It's a pic of the GSNC showing how 1 cup of peas compares to 1 cup of rye berries. Peas are in the front window, and rye in the back window.
I believe that if prepared properly, peas could be a very fast colonizers. The only downside, $.49/lb :/
I will test peas this week with some other experimental substrates.
Does anybody have any Peas at their place so they could tell me how many cups are in a pound of Peas? I need to know how much to purchase.
Peace

I'd be careful with the peas and lentils! They can easily turn to mush and goop up your substrate. Hehe. =]
I havn't tried them myself, but what I would do first is overnight soak the peas and lentils. That might get them to soak up some water.
If your peas/lentils still don't seem to have enough water in them, try simmering for a short amount of time.
When you get the chance, try using the peas/lentils as just additives to rye berries or other grains.
I think the addition of vermiculite to your substrate would improve the texture of it greatly.
Other than that, good luck!
Edit: I think there is about 2.5 cups per lb of split peas.

As a gardener, i know that peas soak themselves perfect over night. and i wont be using split peas, whole peas only. that is a major thing to point out. And i was going to experiment using chunky verm as an additive also. thanks for the ammount in cups
