If anyone has one or just knows of a quality place to buy a begginers sitar around $500 hopefully could you tell me. I have been interested in starting an instrument and I have a guitar but everyone and their mother plays a guitar. I want something that is rare to find people playing(at least int he US). THanks.

Another thing. Do you think it would be at all possible to incorporate a traditional sitar into more modern music? I really would love to try this. I only know of a few 'modern' bands that tried it and only for a few songs if that:Yes(one of the best bands ever if i may say) and The Beatles.
I have listened to Ravi Shankar and he is awesome and I would love to play some traditional indian music but it would be cool to incorporate a sitar into some more modern stuff. Maybe with an accoustic guitar and a mellow drum beat or a beat from some Tabla.

You can use any instrument with any style of music.Create your own style.I want to make a downtempo track with a sitar tablas and some nice bass.

I am also thinking of buying a sitar. I want one that will sound decent but doesn't have to be amazing. And I just don't know if getting one of those 350 dollar ones off ebay is worthwhile? Do they sound alright?

I have done some reasearch and came up with 2 reliable vendors. You could buy a sitar off of Ebay but it very well could end up being a 'tourist' sitar or a replica.
http://www.sitarsetc.com/sitarpages/student_sitars.htm and http://aacm.org/shop/sitar.html
are were I am most likely going to purchase my sitar.

Try www.larkinthemorning.com
I've never ordered from there, but a friend of mine ordered a lyre and some percussion instruments.

How are all these ones on ebay? Anyone who has experience with ebay sitars please let me know how you like them. I would be ever grateful.
