My uncles darn wombat has a new project he has a couple of questions about. He has used two fully colonized bags of rye grain as spawn to his mixture of worm castings, vermiculite, and DRF (2-1-1 mixture). He ended up with about 4-5 inches of this "worm compost" in the bottom of a plastic trunk. It has been in there about 4 days but the grain has almost fully colonized this "worm compost". Should he just leave it and try to fruit straight of this mixture like a dung kit or should he case this with 50/50+ or coco? if he should case it how thick should a casing on something like this be? should he case it right away? thanks for helping little wombat out he has been raving about the trip he took earlier this week. personally I would add a thin layer of verm to fight off infections, but since you said its almost fully colonized it may not be totally needed. The speed of colonization leads me to believe that you have a casing strong enough to fight off most contams, but my theory is better safe than sorry. ie..use your best judgement.

Case with coir as soon as it's colonized. Bring the pH of the coir up with a little lime if you want to/ can (not neccessary). Use about a 1 inch layer. You can use 50/50+ if you like, but I always prefered coir. Castings dry out too fast, and therefore need a casing layer. You can fruit off of anything without a casing layer, just keep the humidity really high and sacrifice some air exchange. That doesn't mean you want to. I'd deffinitely put a casing on this. And yes, plenty of people have tried this.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.
